There should be much more world wide gaming tournaments, so olympics would pretty much do it.

Actually there are a lot of video game competitions. I think the largest is MLG (major league gaming)

I think the hardest part is establishing an audience so they can convince sponsors to give them money. Currently they usually stream on twitch.tv or other streaming services.

There used to be an organization called WCG ( World Cyber Games ) which is the closest to an international competition for all games. However, they, like most of the videogame competitions, run into money problems.

Currently DOTA style games dominate, mostly because the companies who make the game give out million dollar prizes for the winners of the tournament. It's an interesting business model.

There's WCG which was the premier game tournament for a few years.

The biggest game-sports have ever made it was Starcraft 1 in Korea. The top players are paid $200,000+, the teams hve huge sponsors for millions of dollars, and the games are broadcast on live Korean television (OnGameNet and formerly MBCGame). It was Korea's fourth biggest real sport and the best players' names were known by everyone in the country.

The biggest game sports right now internationally are Starcraft 2 (was on live Swedish television and they have a deal with CBS), League of Legends and DOTA 2. Events happen nearly every weekend with prizes of $20-100k.

For example last week was Major League Gaming's Raleigh championship with >400 players in SC2 and LoL and >$150k in prizes.

The DotA 2 Internationals (biggest tourney of the year for DotA) are going on TODAY through Sunday! I still find it funny how a game that's in "beta" has had so many professional tournaments already.

I'd like to have a bigger central hub of yearly tournaments for video games in general, but something other than the olympics. MLG just needs to grow.

It wouldn't really have enough of an audience for that kind of event, but plenty of global gaming competitions already exist. As gaming becomes more mainstream, those competitions will become more popular.

You say that like you're sure that will happen. The trend is falling game sales.

I love esports but I don't think it will grow past its current size. Interest in South Korea has declined massively and they were the best chance at it being globally mainstream.

The trend within the generation, yes. It's starting to slow down now as the companies are preparing to announce and release new consoles. But this generation overall has smashed all previous records.

Yea I play Dota2 and have seen those but I don't want 1 game tournament..

I can't imagine myself sitting on the sofa watching over-weight people play video games...
