Forums - Sony Discussion - "The PS2's death"-predictions

Probably it will finally get to rest in mid to late 09

summer, 2009

Systems tend to keep selling relatively well for anywhere between 2 and 5 years after their successors are released, depending greatly on how successful said successors are (and how successful they themselves were). The PS1 is a good example of a console hanging on for a long while: the system didn't officially get retired until March 23, 2006 (though after about 2003, sales dropped to microscopic levels).

Sky Render - Sanity is for the weak.

Most likely, there will be one more miniaturization of the console before it's retired. It will probably be the size of the PSOne at $99. Right now, it's probably the console directly benefiting from Wii shortages.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

Well it's certainly not this year, so we have at least another year or so left in most places. I guess we'll see it dropped in Japan in 2009, the Americas and Europe in 2010, and other smaller markets in 2011.

I think it start to go in 2010 and be gone by 2011

This christmas (2008) will be it's last.

Predictions for December 31st 2008:
Wii 38,000,000
DS 84,500,000
PS3 17,000,000
PSP 41,000,000
X360 23,000,000

As long as PSP or Wii is still on the market, there will be support for PS2 (software). Sony has realized that and removed BC from PS3.

It (PS3's market share) might hit 30%, but definently not more. ~ Neo

Not to go off topic, but the backwards compatibility was removed due to cost and to encourage PS3 game sales.

As for PS2 games, they will continue to be made as long as consumers continue to buy new ones...

So, when will PlayStation 2 "die"? What do you think? Or will it "survive" another generation (hopefully not)? Will it survive longer in this generation that PlayStation did in the last generation?

(It's really annoying to see that the PS2 is still selling well...)

I think it will. PS2 titles must be dirt-cheap to produce and there's a huge install base. The Atari 2600 actually lasted about 15 years before it "died," the PS2 should be about that long.
