Forums - Nintendo - Wii U Gamepad to utilize wifi instead of bluetooth. rumor

802.11n (300 mbps, what most people call wifi-n) is a higher throughput, better coverage version than 802.11g (54 mbps, wifi-g or wifi)

802.11n uses a bit less power than 802.11 b or g, but it uses a better modulation technique and several "tricks" as MIMO (multiple input, multiple output ->2 or more antennas) and bean forming to improve the communication with less emitted power.

Bluetooth uses the same band, 2.4 GHz, as it's free to use, but it uses much less power in the communications, so it has a much lower throughput.

In other words our brains will get microwaved faster with Wifi then bluetooth.

Yes and no :) If you want to comply with the 802.11n standard, your emission power is limited to 50 mW, a microwave oven uses more than 10k times more power. 802.11 g used 2 dBm more, and 802.11b 4 dBm more, if I remember correctly.

I had another thread on this but if its using WiFi, then in theory a company could probably create a signal booster/bouncer accessorie (ahem, Mad Catz finally making something useful) that lets you use the controller all around the home?

I wonder if Nintendo is purposely limiting the wireless communication to one room to protect too much overlap with the DS/3DS brands.

Because really if I can play this anywhere in my house, my 3DS use will probably drop quite a bit (play it mostly around the house) and Vita play I'll probably just cease entirely. Why play an Assassin's Creed spin-off if I can just play the real deal?

I'm still not sure it uses the standard version of Wireless N. It has some benefits, as you could use an access point or your wireless router to extend the range, but it has some problems, as throughput saturation if you transfer files between computers. Maybe they are using Wireless N as a known marketing term, but it isn't exactly wireless N (Wi-fi direct in the less saturated channel it finds, so no range extension)

I just realized I don't know shit about wireless technology.

Now I see that it isn't an official image. It's all speculation based on something not provided by Nintendo...

Superchunk, you should have said that it's made by a fan.

holidays cant come soon enough

Damn Nintendo just release the damn thing!!!!

Nintendo DS has utilized this technology device-to-device without an access point (router)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wi-Fi#Direct_computer-to-computer_communications

http://mashable.com/2010/10/25/wi-fi-direct-launch/

Communication between Wi-Fi devices isn’t specifically new. The Nintendo DS, for instance, has had device-to-device Wi-Fi interaction for some time, but the technology is proprietary.

EDIT: Beaten...

I've actually never put any mind into this.

So with thems wi-fi, I can game form my toilet. Nice.

Just don't sit too long on the pot.  You legs will fall asleep and then you will have to lean against a wall for a few mins.
