Forums - Nintendo - Wii U specs are surprising, says Sonic developer, specifically the GPU and memory

Wii U GPU and memory better than expected

The executive producer of Sonic And All-Stars Racing Transformed has told Official Nintendo Magazine that he was surprised by the Wii U specs, specifically the GPU and memory which are better than the Sumo developers expected.

In an interview with ONM, Steve Lycett spoke of the challenges his team faced when developing Sonic And All-Stars Racing for Wii U.

"There are always surprises and unexpected challenges when you develop on a new console," said Lycett. "When we first got our hands on the kit, the first surprise was the capability of the GPU (Graphics Processing Unit). We'd been worried that we might need to re-engineer all the effects and shaders in the game, but they worked just fine."

The Sumo producer also complimented the memory which has helped his team make Sonic Racing look smart on Wii U. "The Wii U looks as good as any of the HD platforms. The Wii U has way more memory, so we can take advantage of that with less compression on elements and textures, so it will look all lovely and shiny."

I can't wait till the haters eat crow.

fine to read, really. though not too hard to accomplish better specs than current gen i hope this will lead to better 3rd-party-support for wiiu so that not only (or mostly) casuals buy the console.

Oh my goodness... This redundant statement. Its either "Haha, Wii U is weak!!!" or "hmm, well it is this date and these are this many years old and this that and the."

This is getting tiresome. No matter what NIntendo does they will find some angle to dismiss it. I bet you when the PS4 and Durango come out, nobody is going to be quoting dates to dismiss their improvments like they are doing to the Wii U.

1.5g is surprising. Surprisingly low.

What's confusing about it?

Every time something pops up about the Wii U having problems, here come the doomsayers trashing the console promoting rumors. Everytime something is said somewhere about the Wii U being stronger or getting a better version of a game, here comes some dude talking about how old teh 360/PS3 are and completely dismissing any improvments. I've seen this so many times in so many places this it has become an eye sore.

I wish they would at least come up with something new from time to time. The same old statements over and over and over and over. Where's the originality?

Just check the post above mine. Same old, same old.

At least, we can expect this game to be complete.

I agree about Andres post, but Walfuir, he said absolutely nothing wrong.

I'd be surprised if you read the article with that kind of comment to be completely honest.
