Forums - Nintendo - Wii U specs are surprising, says Sonic developer, specifically the GPU and memory

Awesome. I was a bit worried that the WiiU maybe weaker than SNES.

Nobody has said it's more powerful. You are hyperbolic.

@Teigaga How exactly do you know it's a .5 upgrade. You seem to be stuck on this mindset of Ninty is going after the core gamer. Why are Hd gamers so obsessed with the idea of Ninty going after the core. What they have shown so far is them targeting the Wii demographic and giving them more to play(3rd party games). They would like a piece of the core market but they are definitely aiming wider than the Wii. Aiming for the core got them roughly 80 million a piece, which Ninty has already done with the Wii so no they are definitely not going after Sony or Microsofts market. Making a console compatible with core games does not mean they are targeting the core. Aiming wider includes the core and many other types of gamers. Handheld type gaming can also be done on the WiiU.

I think the truth about the wii was that nintendo simply were'nt confident enough to compete with the 360 and ps3 on power, Had the gamecube been a success and sold 40m+ I think the wii would have been closer to the strength of the 360. I think with the wii U they may possibly be of the mind set that  all 90m wii owners are patiently waiting for nintendo to release a system in HD as opposed to simply buying a ps3/360. Either that or what you suggested.

The problem is the success of the ps3/360 (140m combined) is largely down to more traditional/core gaming titles. I don't think a 0.5 upgrade in graphics is going to convince the guys who buy these games (COD, Assasins Creed, Halo, GTA, Uncharted, Final fantasy) to buy a new system, so I think they (sony especially) have no choice but to take that full Leap towards HQ CGI quality visuals, and I feel the Wii U will be left out. Sony/MS could try and innovate as nintendo did with the wii but I can't see what they could really bring to the table. Xbox has Kinect, so there  is potential kinect 2 will blow our minds but I think we will likely just see higher accuracy, which I don't think is needed for most of the games which use kinect. And sony have nothing.... the point is I think Sony/MS will realise this and max out the power of their consoles. Which by late 2013/2014 that may not be as expensive as one imagines it to be now.

That is a fair point, but I disagree with your conclusion.  I think that Microsoft in particular is dead set on targeting the casual market.  Look at their E3 conference.  When you watched that, did you see a company who was interested in cutting edge gaming technology, or did you see a company who is more interested in selling you a machine to play your netflix on?  Microsoft at least is leaning just as casually as Nintendo, with a few legacy shooting franchises.

As for Sony, can they afford to max out the power of their consoles?  Sony is in rough financial shape, and they're counting on their gaming division to help pull them out of this slump.  Sony can't afford to make an insanely powerful console and take a beating on it.  Nintendo could survive another Gamecube.  Sony can't survive another PS3.

I can't remember the exact quote, but reggie said something at e3 about the WiiU being the only console you'd need to own.  Nintendo is definitely targeting the core market, as games like ZombiU show (I know, its Ubi).  But ZombiU started out as a tongue in cheek horror game and evolved into a true serious survival horror.

I'm of the opinion that E3 was for the casuals.  They introduced the casual fair, the wii fit u, the Nintendoland, and showed some 3rd party stuff that we already knew about for the most part.  I think there's a lot more 3rd party stuff in the works that no one is allowed to talk about yet because Nintendo wants the big reveal themselves.

Or I could be completely wrong.  Who knows until it happens.  I just don't see Nintendo repeating the success of the wii with the same casual market.  They already have their casual games that they are happy with.  Nintendo needs to recapture the core.

@Teigaga and where did you read any of that. Even if you are right they will once again have very expensive price tags which didn't exactly help them much this Gen. Have you ever asked yourself, if we aligned the Wiis launch to before the 360s launch, like the WiiU is lauching before it's competitors, how would today's landscape look. The deficit between them would be even greater. You guys seem to forget this. The Xbox releasing before the Wii helped them way more than HD gamers give credit to. I honestly hope you are right by the way. It only means they will lose this Gen like last Gen.

Read what, The thing about the 720/ps4 being 6-8x current gen systems? Pretty much every leak of the durango dev kit pretty much states this, just google. Some reports have varied between the system having 8gb-12gb. One thing is for sure the devs kits are out there and some 99% certain some of these leaks are legit. The ps3 less so, especially since there have only been one major leak. With the 720 we have a ton of reports all ranging from early 2012 to summer which all state the same thing.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-the-curious-case-of-the-durango-devkit-leak

I don't neccessarily think the 360 launching before the wii was that significant. The 360 launch year was a fairly bland one until Gears of war came at the end of 2006. Further more the 360 didn't make much of  dent in Europe during that year and yet, yet the success of the wii in the region was no greater then in america or Japan. In my opinion the HD market didn't come into its own until fall 2007, so what transpired before this was largely irrelevant.

I also wouldn't go as far as to say that anyone lost this gen, all 3 were successful with each passing 60m+, compare to the 22-24m the orginal xbox and gamecube both sold. You could possibly argue sony lost because of the amount of money they've been loosing recently but I'm not sure how much of that the playstation/song games devision is responsible for.

I think as long as they stay below $349/£279 that the prices will be reasonable. Remember that the ps3 cost was largely down to the expense of the Blu-ray player which had a slow adoption rate. Next gen won't see another format enter  the industry as blu-rays can store up to 128GB when needed, no one needs more then that. The 360 on the other hand always had a reasonable price tag.

Reggie's quote- "I think in the end, the consumer choice is going to be... Once I buy my Wii U, that satisfies my Nintendo cravings and my cravings for all of these other great multi-platform franchises, then what is the role of a competitive platform? It's going to have to live on the backs of some sort of unique proposition, or unique content. And to me that's the million-dollar question. Of our potential competitors down the road, who's going to have that compelling content that's going to say, hey, now I need to branch out and pick up this additional system? I think it's for them to answer."

Nintendo should basically do what they did with the Wii with the addition of better third party support.  Battling for the 16-34 male when there are hundreds of millions outside of that demographic would be folly.  I think what Nintendo showed at E3 was a good balance.  For the hardcore?  Rayman Legends, Assassin's Creed, Zombi U, Pikmin 3, P100.  For the casuals?  Just Dance 4, Sing (or w/e their karaoke game is called), and Wii Fit U.  For people in between?  Mario and Scribblenauts Unlimited.

you are dreaming if you believe nextgen consoles are going to have 8-12gb of ram and cost 350$

That is true, but Sony has always been a one trick pony.  They believe they make premium devices and try to sell them at a premium price point.  Vita and PS3 both fit this mold.  I think they're going to try to steal Nintendo's thunder by having PS3/4 and Vita connectivity just like Nintendo and the UPad.  But lets be honest about first impressions.  The first impression anyone gets from video games is how they look.  So if WiiU and PS4 look about equivalent, then it goes down to the next impression.  The Wii won with the second impression - unique experience.  If Sony copies the Upad successfully then the experiences will be similar or the same.  So the it comes to the 3rd impression: price point.  We don't know the WiiU's exact price point, but we have a ballpart betwee 250 and 350 dollars.  400 is possible, but I don't think it is at all likely.  So if we take the high end for WiiU, that's 350.  Comes with a tablet controller.  To get the same game experience and WiiU offers someone will have to own a Vita, which currently costs 250 dollars, as well as purchase a PS4.  So unless PS4 costs 100 dollars, WiiU wins on the third impression: price.

"But wait" you say, "PS3/Vita connectivity already happens, so all a person would have to buy is a vita to get the same WiiU experience.  That's only 250 Dollars."  You'd be right, which is another reason why I think WiiU will sell for 250.  But even if it doesn't, and we give a 100 dollar advantage to PS3/Vita; WiiU looks better than PS3.  Its at least a half step above, if not a full step.  So it wins on the first impression.  Plus, it has the psychological effect of the "the latest new thing", whereas PS3 is old hat.  WiiU is going to sell like hotcakes based on it being a new thing.  And by the time PS4 comes around, with whatever price point it sells at (I'm thinking 400 min for any kind of "quantum leap"), then we'll have 2 competing consoles with about the same graphics, about the same play experience, and one that is 50 to 150 dollars cheaper.  WiiU wins again.

So i'm pretty much counting Sony out of the next generation.  They squandered all their PS2 goodwill on PS3, which flopped and has been bad PR for them for the most part.  I don't see a way that they can match or beat what WiiU offers without it costing lots more than the WiiU will cost.

PS3 was in no way a flop. Still selling good and will sell well for a few more years with the pending PS3 super slim and further price cuts. Also I don't think that PS4 will try and copy the WiiU pad thing. They have vita connectivity which will compliment the PS4 but will not be the main feature of the console. I think the PS4 will have great graphics but that won't be the main focal point of the console. I think they will have something to make the console unique to PC and 720. and the 720 will be doing the same.

All this is my opinion of course but theyve been taught a few lessons last gen and I'm pretty sure they will not ignore them.

Well they are comparing it to the current Gen. More memory and a current GPU. I hope it can keep up with the next Gen. But I know some people heads will explode because I am not singing the WiiU praises just yet. Anyone can be skeptical because of Nintendo's track record with underpowering their systems to the point they miss out on third party exclusives. People are just being cautious. We all got burned on the Wii. How many months did you have to wait to get a good game from one to the next? Don't be mad at the skepticism be mad at Nintendo for putting gamers in a position the having to go out and buy a system from the competition.

Just because you chose to quote a famous dead person does not mean that you are some type of intellect nor does it mean that the quote in question is correct.

Didn't mean flopped completely, but given their total dominance in the PS2 generation, the PS3 definitely flopped against expectations.  And I'm not sure what else they CAN do to differentiate themselves from Microsoft or the PC market.  The whole media center thing is going to be a feature shared across all 3 consoles.  Personally, I think microsoft is crazy to try and shoehorn windows 8 or a windows 8 variant into anything and everything with a circuit board, Durango included.  So I don't see what sony can offer at a reasonable price that will blow us all away.
