Bad move, Sony. The cost implications will likely be great, and it'll likely be at least another 10 or so years before its viable for most people.

Why will the cost implications be great? If they don't use it for gaming, it will be fine, if they do, it will be absurd

It's a gaming console. If they include it, they'll use it for games.

Says who?

Playstation, just like XBox are more than just gaming consoles. They are living room media hubs.

That may be the case, but I can't imagine any point in including something in a system, technology which is still in its very early infancy, for something other than the primary purpose of the system.

I.E- There's no point including it otherwise because they undermine their own tech.

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

There are already blu ray players that display 4k. Adding this to the ps4 isn't going to increase cost. And these sets will probably be available at a decent price within 7 years, which will definitely be within the ps4's life span.

How do you know, what numbers are you using?

Its just an estimate. The 4k sets being released right now are around 30000 bucks so we'll see how long it takes to drop to a reasonable price.

What is funny is that when PS3 came out everyone said "It's too early. HDTV are too expensive."

Look how that turned out.

Now it's "It's too early. UHDTV are too expensive."

PS4 won't be releasing for at least another 12-18 months. So at some point within the first 2-3 years of PS4 lifetime those UHDTV prices will drop dramatically.

No idea how this is being spun as a negative, let alone people thinking this will result in a $400-$600 console, lol.

Futureproofing can end up acting like waterproofing if done wrong, in that you end up causing a system to be proofed from having a future, if you miss the price point.

Considering I'm still more than happy with DVD resolution for my movies, I can't see myself giving a damn about 4K anything soon.

Signature goes here!

Fair question, but mine was more about the blu-ray players than the tvs. In essence my question here is more about the PS4's BOM than the rate of adoption question (price of 4k TVs on release).

"to support" meaning you can plug in a new cable (perhaps hdmi or dp) to connect to a 4k-display. done. *perhaps* the ps4 has an upscaling chip but even this should be doubtful.

Either the PS4 is gonna be a powerful god monster with photorealistic games or the 4K playback will be mainly for video playback. I'm hoping for powerful god monster, but that resolution jump would still require a TV upgrade as well as a new HDMI cable to send all that information.

I am the Playstation Avenger.

I think some of us here a "jumping the gun" a little bit here, this 4k resolution seems to be movie purposes primarily, we don't for a fact if Sony will use this a a standard for their gaming(even if that come to fruition probably only Sony's first-parties will use it...and probably PSN games)

we all know that blu-ray itself still has alot of room before it becomes obsolete, with Sony being one of the leaders of Blu-ray tech, I highly doubt they will shoot themselves in the foot by making this their new format a standard for all of the PS4's usage. I think the only thing that will be expensive here will be the TV to support the feature, with Sony already having a $200 4k blu-ray player with the PS4 about a year and some change away, the price/manufacturing can definitely be reduced.

4k  Bd players are already available for $200 and no doubt less by the time holidays come along. PS4 isn't out till at least late next year and those 4k players will no doubt cost much less then.

They would undermine their own media machine if it lacked 4kbd video playback.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

Got a retro room? Post it here!

Another thing, this hits, along with people trying to process whether to go 3D or not. Then the price of 720P and 1080P TVs really get dropped even further, phasing out non-HD and people think that, for the price 720P and 1080P are sufficient so they don't go with the even higher end but buy the cheaper models.
