Forums - Gaming Discussion - Graphics: Gamecube vs. Xbox vs. PS2 vs. Dreamcast

I think I played like nearly all of the GC library (No joke). I was a big GC supporter during it's run.

I'm not 100% sure since I haven't played it in such a long time, but F-Zero GX I remember being one of the smoothest games ever on a console. It was also gorgeous and extremely fast, making it all the more impressive.

Rogue Squadron 3 for GC is the best looking game in the last gen for me, because had not only a great visual also had a great perfomance, the game run at 60 frames per second without drops.
Half-Life 2 in Xbox has frame rate drops.
Xbox have more and fantastic lights and shadows because the GPU can use shaders and dinamic shadows, in GC that was a technique complicated to create.
Believe or not, Dreamcast have a best GPU than PS2.

Rogue Squardron 3 not only had dynamic shadows, it had self shadowing and bloom lighting.

Another things that people don't seem to be aware of is that the Xbox1 ports of Doom3 and Half Life 2 were not only horribly downgraded, some things had to be completely redesigned or taken out to get them to run. Even then they still could barely hold a steady 30 FPS. I remember playing Doom 3 on the Xbox after playing it on PC and I could almost swear that the FPS never got above 25.

Notice that not only is the texture and lighting quality greatly scaled down. The small wires in the back have been removed completely.

Alex had to be completely redesigned for the Xbox version of Half-Life 2

People bragged like they actually got PC games on the Xbox when they didn't. They could have ported Doom3 and Half-Life 2 to anything with downgrades like that.

Its a hard call with the Dreamcast. Overall, I will say the PS2 is stronger but there are some things the Dreamcast could do that the PS2 simply could not, like EMBM and not processing things that were not on the screen.

then you'd definitely notice the FPS because what people praised those games the most were the ability to maintain good FPS and good visuals for the most part, art style aside. It's not hard to make something look better, but if it's runs at subpar performance, then it's hard to consider it a technical marvel on consoles. I have no hard feeling towards MGS3 of course as it's my 2nd fav one after the original MGS on PSX. I think Shadows of the Colossus was a pretty cool game and set the mood pretty well but that also ran kinda crappy tbh, not to mention it wasn't really visually impressive in my book, it was more about style, and it had a really good style. FF12 was pretty good, it combined FF11 into the game and made a really interesting world to explore and I liked how the towns were always busy, but man, Fran's ass would have looked so much better on the xbox or GC lol.

Style over realism... all previous consoles could do without a sweat!

Jet Set Radio Future

I did notice as I've said, but I don't recall the performance in MGS3 being as bad as you say. SotC I'll admit was downright terrible at times though.

I think I was just so used to the nice FPS in MGS2 that MGS3 just seemed off to me, it was okay for the most part other than the shitty cut scene high FPS drops and when explosions or too many people were on screen which would totally make me go wtf.

I'll put another shout out for F-Zero GX. I recently played it emulated on my PC at 1080p, wow! I then played it at 480p on my Wii and even then it's still one of the cleanest looking last gen games. Heaps of racers on screen, great texturing, blazing speed and a frame-rate that just wouldn't quit made, and still make, for an impressive package.

I'm looking forward to seeing what can be done on the Wii U.

Edit.

No edits :P Say what you're thinking.

when i first played the xbox it was hitman i think i only noticed the resolution better than any other game on other consoles..and looking back the gamecube had the most impressive 1st and 2nd party games then any other..a more constant frame rate, better textures and more polygons.

still today i turn on my gamecube and play f zero gx or rogue squadrom and its just incredible as if its a title from 3 years ago.
