Going by leaks so far HappySquirrel all 3 next gen consoles will have a similar architecture and, more importantly, their GPUs will have the same feature sets. I'm fully expecting the U to have no problem receiving down-ports and supplying up-ports from and to the PS4 and 720.

You'll obviously see the eye candy being downgraded but the average gamer (and it still surprises me that these days more gamers aren't clued up as far as hardware and graphical effects goes) won't see a great deal of difference between the U SKUs and PS4/720 SKUs unless they're looking at them side by side. You'll probably end up with a lower native resolution, more jaggies, more pop-in and longer loading times but the games will still look and play fine on the U.

1. Remember Killer Freaks From Outer Space? So do I. This game may not have had too much development time since they cancelled that idea.

2. There is no reason to expect "true" next-gen graphics on the Wii U. Several developers have made that pretty clear.

3. Graphics don't mean shit. Or at least as long as they are ok, and are complemented by excellent gameplay.

"Well, first of; PS360 games weren't all that pretty back in 2005/2006 because developers had never developed games in HD. And now, in 2012, we can't simply blame the graphics on that any more; Ubisoft have developed lots of games in HD, so they're not inexperienced. It's true that the hardware is still new - but I'm sure they could have gotten better graphics."

This part has always bugged me, why are people always comparing Wii U to PS360, those are different machines from different companies, why not compare Wii U to actual Ninty systems? And going of that it seems that from N64 on up they really havent pushed the graphics for those libraries. N64, you had Mario 64, probably the best looking game at the time, but as the years went on was there really a game that top it? GC all games looked about on par for the most part, starting from the first year of the cube to the last. Wii, can anyone really point out a bunch of games that have released this year or last that look significantly better than the ones in the first 2 years, and im not talking about the PS2 ports.

IMHO, I dont think you will be seeing games looking that much better on Wii U, maybe a bit better, but not alot. Im simply going by the history of Ninty's own systems. BUT i could be wrong, they could pull a SNES on me, which is what im hoping but im not optimistic.

From a technical perspective there was significant steady improvement in game visuals on the N64 ... As far as poligon counts, texture detail, and lighting effects Mario 64 < Banjo Kazooie < Donkey Kong 64

Given a fixed functionality system, as long as there is quality development happening graphics will see improvements. The first big jump for the Wii U will probably be the result of developers producing advanced LOD systems that take advantage of tessellation which will result in the system producing similar graphical results while using less processing power; and this will be followed by improvements over time as the artists learn to develop graphical assets which take real advantage of this.

Even though the systems may have very different architectures, the same basic technologies and approaches will be viable across all next generation systems, and it is likely that in improving graphics for one of the systems developers will improve it for others.

Fair enough, Banjoe did look better than Mario 64, but then what happned with GC? Wii? Im not saying it cant be done, im just saying considering 3rd parties track record and even Ninty's own track record on the last consoles, I'm not holding my breath.

I fully agree with you Danne. Even if they are releasing many games on WiiU, they are all low-risk games.

We will not see more than 3 to 5 high-grade exclusives on the WiiU until, and only if, it becomes the undisputed market leader. Until then, enjoy them multiplats and low-risk new IPs.

Great article DS.

That's the main reason I'm not getting a Wii U anytime soon. I'll wait at least for a year after its release.

If you're not into Nintendo games and low-risk yet interesting new IPs (mildly good graphics, great experience), then that's the way to do it.

For all other cases, the WiiU is a great value imho. It depends on your tastes, like you said.

Ive said it before, but we aint gonna see that big a jump in graphics next gen as people seem to think. WiiU may be slightly weaker than Microsoft and Sonys next offerings, but i reckon like last gen there wont be that much difference between the three. Just like Cube,PS2,Xbox , Xbox was slightly more powerful than the Cube, which was slightly more powerful then PS2 but nothing too significant, and they all shared multipats.

There were improvements with the Gamecube, but it's life was relatively short with limited third party support and most third party developers only cared about getting the Gamecube to play PS2 ports.

The Wii on the other hand was an unusual beast ... Being that it was an upgrade on the Gamecube, most internal tools from Nintendo were rapidly upgraded to take advantage of the enhancements and few third party publishers tried to produce games that would stress the Dreamcast.

The Wii U is in a different situation ...

It is launching first, will likely see decent sales (at least 10 to 12 million units per year for 6 or more years) and will likely be similar enough to Sony and Microsoft's consoles to be part of multi-platform development. The head start will ensure that the Wii U will be the most important platform for cross platform development for the first few years (at least), and after that the steady sales will ensure that effort and resources are put into these games for the Wii U.

I'm really interested in those, yet money is an issue for me and I am having a great time with my PS3 and my PC. I do have a coupple of Wii games that I should go back to, too. Therefore, I am in no rush. I want to see how things unwrap and let the urge to go next gen grow. At the moment, I'm pretty pleased with my Battlefield 3 Premium sessions and my PSN Plus free games.

I read around the internet that Wii U has not enough shaders.

Anyway, even if developers has a lot of experience in HD development, Wii U is rumored to have a different architecture but nobody has reported how much. Let's take in consideration Nintendo tweaks. That's about GPU, while for CPU is rumored to be Out-of-Order (OoO) which needs to be developed for and not only porting. But iirc CPU is for physics and AI instead of graphics.

Hopefully at Nintendo Christmas, I mean, Fall Conference we'll see first party games using more of the power of the cons...

...What the fuck I'm talking about? Wasn't gameplay more important than graphics? And weren't we happy with Wii graphics? Why are we discussing this?

I can't imagine anyone could be happy with the wii's graphics, unless they still own a CRT, Did you ever play the wii on a large HDTV, it's low resoltuion looks like utter crap.

Played Wind Waker and now Paper Mario TTYD on a Samsung Plasma HDTV (42"), and I'm happy. But as mentioned before, that's only about me.

Exactly. It depends on if you can wait to get your hands on the WiiU or not. Knowing myself, I can't wait, but you're happy with your current setup, so it would be good for you to wait and let us keep you informed :)

I actually prefer to play my Wii games without being in progressive scan. Reason being is that the deinterlace the TV provides on the signal actually smooths out the jaggies, and acts as a sort of muddy anti-aliasing. Its less crisp, but I have a serious thing against jaggies.
