Forums - General - What setup will you use over the next 5 years for your technology?

As we enter the time where the digital age is beginning to take its full shape what setup will you use for your home needs and on the move?

So many different companies are bringinging to fruition there vision for the future. Google, Microsoft, Apple, Sony among others. But what devices and services do you have your eye on for the coming future?

For myself I plan on going the Microsoft route. Surprise there. ;)

I plan on using the surface for all my internet, music hub, on the go video and document usage around the home and away. I also plan on using WP8 for my connectivity to Surface and all my mobile phone needs as well as my mp3 player via Xbox Music. Lastly I plan on using the next Xbox for all my streaming services like Netflix, Lovefilm and of course the XBL service for Downloadable HD films. All this should tie in nicely together via Windows 8 platfrom across all 3 and sould negate any issues of converting anything. Xbox as a brand is beginning to be used by Microsoft to promote any streaming service even on Windows 8 now whic is a great thing as Xbox and XBL are very impressive services.

What plans have you got?

Probably stick with an Android phone. I've used both Windows phone and android and I like both, but I do like Android a bit more. This may change though if Windows Phone 8 impresses me. I will be a Wii U and Pc gamer that's not going to change. I will probably keep using Netflix, although I just signed up for Hulu plus and haven't really used it yet. Lastly I just purchased a 2012 Chevy Cruze 2LT RS model so that'll be good for at least 8+ years.

No plans really, I just sort of go with the flow.
I'll probably end up using my Orbis for Movie/TV streaming. Keep using my ipod or walkman for music and PC for internet. Various machines for gaming. But this could all change.

I pretty much do everything I need from my Nexus 7.

My Galaxy S2 will satisfy my phone needs until maybe the S4 comes out and I'll be getting the nextbox when It's released.

Systems I've owned: Atari 2600, NES, SNES, GBColor, N64, Gamecube, PS2, Xbox, GBAdvance, DSlite, PSP, Wii, Xbox360, PS3, 3DS, PSVita, PS4, 3DS XL, Wii U

The best quote I've seen this year:

I can't afford what I want.. but what I would like is something like this:

Decent living room TV connected to the internet in some way (probably a small PC would be preferable to a "smart TV" then I don't have to navigate some proprietary browser system) as well as a gaming system suitable for local multiplayer. If the TV doesn't have a disc player integrated then I may need one of those (or put one in the small PC) Also probably one of those sound bars because I am not enough of an audiophile to care about the minor advantage of multiple speakers all over the room.

Mostly used in a living room/around the home would be a tablet device mainly as a more versatile internet solution than the PC connected to the TV

Then perhaps in a spare room a more powerful PC with a decent monitor (again I'm no technogeek so I don't need a 30" monitor or anything, actually I think my current bedroom TV (19") can act as a monitor... although it's only 720p so I would probably get eye strain using it as one, so maybe skip that idea)... Perhaps a touchscreen monitor so that Windows 8 actually makes sense.

Then a smartphone for when going out.

The PCs would naturally be running Windows (I'm personally happy with 7 unless I have a touchscreen, but by the time I get ti implement any of this 7 will probably be defunct anyway)
I would like the surface pro tablet too, which will be Win8, and could also serve as an alternative to a laptop for a portable work device.
I guess with all that Windows around it would be useful to have a Windows 8 phone too, though that is the one bit I am more hesitant about as I have never tried one... if not then I would probably go Android.

I'd also want to be able to use the tablet/smartphone to remote control the PCs, which would probably work better if all devices use Win8.

If I have the money I would then probably want to wire up the whole place for sound... at least a decent speaker in each room all linked so I can listen to music all over instead of just one room at once. (and control which ones are on or not with phone/tablet)

That would do me nicely.
The games console would likely be Nintendo (Wii U for the forseeable future, though I don't have any plans to buy it near launch atm), I really don't see the point in buying an Xbox if I have a PC connected to the TV. If money isn't an issue I would go for Sony as a secondary console. Not really bothered about handhelds now, so I definitely wouldn't be when I have a smartphone.

So:
Music: My small library of CDs I bought years ago plus Spotify free through the living room PC, or as the surface Pro is a fully featured computer it would work on that too (you need a paid spotify service for ARM devices)

TV: Freeview (I think all UK TVs come with it integrated nowadays) is perfectly fine for scheduled programs, other stuff I can stream online through the browser

Film: I generally just pick films from scheduled TV, or occasionally stream them. I might consider something like LoveFilm or Netflix but I generally don't watch enough to consider them worth the money.

Gaming: Wii U (and possibly PS3 or 4) in the living room, maybe get a controller to play some PC games (through Steam) there too. Other PC games played on the better PC in a spare room. Probably wouldn't do any app gaming at home, but light entertainment would be nice on the smartphone. Not sure what I would do with the Wii, might give it to my parents for Wii Fit, or maybe store it away so I still have the posibility of playing my remaining GameCube collection.

Oh, I'd quite like an e-reader too, bought one for my dad last Christmas and I like it, currently my reading is done in good old fashioned paperback and some free internet fan-fiction... if I could get an e-reader that I could copy text files to that would be awesome, as e-ink is so much nicer on the eyes than a normal screen.

After initial purchase the only remaining costs with this setup would be internet, phone and electric bill as well as actually buying games. So upfront cost (minus the speaker in every room bit) would be probably be under £3k, possibly under £2.5k depending on the phone contract (the surface taking up an annoyingly large amount of that, so that would probably be a late addition unless I need it for work) Then I don't really need an uber internet connection (currently get around 10-15Mbps, though we are in a transitional stage as the contract was for 10Mbps, but soon the lowest Virgin will provide is 30Mbps) so with a land line maybe £20-25 a month after the usual sign up deal ends, and £20 or so a month for a phone contract.

I love technology, but I honestly don't care about products like that or having any allegiance to a brand. Like Andre said, I'll go with the flow. Play games on all Playstation consoles and possibly Nintendo consoles and keep on using and upgrading my Windows 7 PC. I'll probably use Netflix on my Playstation consoles too. I won't buy any kind of non-gaming handheld device other than a simple phone.

For gaming and general needs, I'm going to fully upgrade my PC in two years and probably ain't going to buy a new console. I'm going to keep downloading my music as I've always did and probably watch movies on the cinema and buying blu-rays for the stuff I really like. Don't really care for using smartphone features.

Basically not much is going to change.

Resist getting a smartphone for as long as possible, just like i did with getting a cellphone with an actual plan (no non-emergency cell until mid 2008)

Stick with Nintendo consoles, and a Windows laptop. Likely i won't be able to afford a new laptop for five years anyway, so i'll have to hope this Acer holds out.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Need a new smartphone (android) and a new laptop (might need Mac for Final Cut Pro but I'm not an Apple fan) hopefully early next year before my trip. I need a new TV for my room but that's going to have to wait. I was thinking of the PS3 3D monitor because those prices fell really fast and its the perfect size for what I need.

Please Watch/Share this video so it gets shown in Hollywood.

First I'll upgrade my graphics card, probably around the time AC3 comes out on pc.
In the coming 5 years I'll be looking to upgrade my home theater projector with a 2160p version, at which point a new pc will be welcomed capable of rendering in 3840x2160.
Looking forward to the new consoles until then.

I'll still be playing my cd collection the old fashioned way, sounds fine, better then mp3 anyway. I'm much more impressed with music on blu-ray. I'll keep buying blu-rays until hvd comes out, streaming is a dead end for now, just the occasional Netflix. I don't see any significant internet upgrades in my area in the coming 5 years. I'll keep recording movies from tv, better quality and newer content then Netflix here in Canada.

I cancelled my mobile phone 3 years ago, not interested. No interest in handheld gaming either, I hate small screens :)

Oh and for internet I'll be using this 10 year old laptop with it's lovely big 1400x1050 screen with windows xp until it blows up.
