Forums - Sony - Vita is doomed, Sony doesn't get gaming, PSP/PS3 losing money

If you would have predict Sonys situation right now to somebody 10 years ago he probably would have laughed and say this will never happen, 10 years ago nobady could imagine that mighty Sony someday will fall. But I think it is not to late for them, but they really have to reconsider the whole company now in my opinion, Sony struggles not only in the gaming industrie.

But especially the gaming industrie is important for them, Sony needs finally own new ideas, they can not only copy all the time from the other competitors and think they will succeed with this. The last 15 years Sony had no real own ideas, Sony always only reacted upon innovations from the other ones. And now they pay the price for their lethargy.

Wake up Sony, hire some new creative staff, develop some new ideas and not only copy all the time from the others, than Sony sure will survive in the gaminbiz.

Is the memory card pricing actually an issue stopping people from buying it though, or is it more something most buyers find out about AFTER purchasing a Vita and complain about then? (At which point it's already been a sale whether they regret it later or not)

And as much as I hate to admit it, because I REALLY want the  next gen consoles to come as soon as possible, I don't think we'll see PS4 in 2013. You said it yourself, Sony is in bad shape money wise, so can they AFFORD to spend vast sums of money developing and producing a next gen console right now? Wouldn't it be better for them to just ride the now profitable PS3 for a few more years, as it's still selling pretty well?

The price of the memory card is pretty well known so I think most people who are currently buying a PS-Vita know the `real` price is $300 ...

As for the PS4, the question is whether Sony can afford not to release a console in 2013. The longer their competition is on the market the more likely they are to run-away with the market and undermine your ability to sell your system. There could be a much greater risk associated with this (once again) based on Sony's financial situation; being that they can't afford massive losses it is plausable they will release a 'PS3.5' rather than a system with state of the art technology, and if they launched in 2014 without a compelling reason to buy their system instead of the Wii U or XBox 720 it would be DOA.

But if a Vita costs them all of $160 to make, and they charge that much for a memory card, (they must be making nice fat profit given the price of the things) surely they have room for a cut without losing money, or at least without losing much.

As for PS4, the Wii and PS2 managed to win their respective gens despite being beaten to the market by competitors. It's too early to comment on the 720, but it's possible the Wii U might suffer the fate of the Dreamcast if the tablet doesn't hook people and if the specs aren't much beyond the 360 and PS3. In short, Sony might not lose too much by holding out until 2014.

I'm willing to bet we won't see PS4 in 2013.

If it was coming tha soon, surely we'd be getting the same rumblings of it  that we're currently getting of the 720 or that we got for the Wii U in the early months of 2011 before its announcement.

tl;dr

I was ssssoooo excited that this could be a Rol thread!

And then it wasn't, and now... I am sad.

Vita is doomed in certain perspectives. Doomed in the sense it will never truly compete with the 3DS. This does not mean the Vita cannot be successful, which it will likely be.

PS3 "losing money", yes, I haven't looked at the numbers in awhile but the PS3 has yet to still break even on it's investment. PS3 lost so much money in the first few years, that it is still playing catch up, even though it is the best selling console atm. He also mentions and makes note that Sony is playing catch up in the online and motion control aspect over the PS3's span, saying how it took PS3 awhile just to catch up and barely compete with XBOX live, and playing catch up with the MOVE, you can see how he has a good point. It's certain they are not the leaders anymore, but the followers, let's see if the PS4 can change that again.

He makes a lot good points though, but many of them ignore facts. PSP is pretty successful, I'd say hugely successful, the author would have you think it failed, but he is obviously just comparing it to the DS, which doesn't make sense because he's trying to convince us that Sony cannot do portable gaming well, when it has.

Let me clarify an earlier post of mine in this thread. Before I was scared away from the PC by lightning, I just wanted to make clear that while I don't think Sony understood gaming during the days of the PS1 and PS2, I do think they understand gaming and gamers, now. Now, the problem is that they are having a hard time understanding how to motivate casual gamers and non-gamers. In fact, I think it's too early to tell if ANYBODY creating an 8th gen console (portable or home) understands what the majority of gamers want at this point. This is a transition period in gaming and anything goes.

First of all... Sony is not Doom.. Losing money? Yes.
Ps3 released almost 1 year behind 360. And ps3 global sales is not that bad (compared with 360)

Actually this gen is really great if we compare with prev gen when PS2 sales just like a monster and the other hand Xbox+GC sales combine can't beat PS2 Sales.

Vita? I had a great time with my PSP and I had a faith with Vita. Vita just need a "lot" of games and price cut.. But price cut alone not gonna help if there is no games and when this is happen, sony will losing money again.

The BOM may only be $160 but that doesn't include the assembly of the device, the packaging, the shipping and handling, the cost of developing the hardware and OS, and the marketing budget. While you can probably ignore the R&D costs as a sunk cost, I would be surprised if Sony was turning a significant profit on the sale of PS-Vita units.

As for rumblings, I have heard as many rumours for the PS4 as I have heard for the XBox 720, and I would personally be surprised if they don't both release in 2013

Anyone want to take a bet? I bet that the Vita will hit 10 million units sold by the end of next year.
If I lose, I will change my signature to an admittance that I was wrong for 6 months.

I'm thinking you should change your bet because you're thinking the Vita will sell over 7,000,000 units in about four months.  That's over 1.5 million per month.  You might as well change your signature now.

He said "by the end of next year".  Which would be December 2013.

edit: I win.
