Forums - Nintendo - Could The Wii U GamePad Suffer From Latency?

Posted Thu, 09 Aug 2012 | 12:12 BST by Damien McFerran

Could the GamePad's biggest selling point prove to be its biggest weakness?

Early hands-on reports suggest so

One of the most impressive aspects of the Wii U's GamePad controller is its ability to stream gameplay directly from the console so you can play on it even when someone else is hogging your television. This facet of the controller could be a massive selling point in homes that boast large families and subsequently experience plenty of competition for dominance in the living room, and is sure to form a large part of Nintendo's promotional campaign for the upcoming system.

However, ShackNews has made a worrying claim regarding the performance of gameplay streaming on the GamePad. The site recently previewed Mass Effect 3, and reported "a tiny bit" of latency.

"I actually preferred playing exclusively on the GamePad, as it was less confusing than the TV hybrid play. However, I felt as though there was a tiny bit of latency. My response time felt slightly slower than when playing on the TV — makes sense, given the Wii U GamePad is receiving a wireless video feed."

While it's worth remembering that until the console is out on store shelves, any preview should be taken with a pinch of salt — it could be that the version of the game ShackNews tested was at fault for the delay, or perhaps Nintendo will make improvements to the way GamePad streaming works before the hardware is put into full production. However, the existence of any kind of latency whatsoever could potentially ruin the experience — and rob the console of one of its most appealing selling points.

Its best not to believe anything and just take everything as rumor until it hits the shelves and real people get to play.

The latency is defiantly there, people will experience it first hand when they try Zombie U.

People always see what they want.

Iwata talked about this issue too when comparing the gamepad with smartglass.

Wii U was designed from the ground up to have two devices interoperate. "We have paid particular attention to the latency," Iwata noted. "If you have latency within that process, or lag within that process, it's no longer a quality game. So clearly and naturally the latency for a situation like that is going to be very different from a device that has specifically been designed to achieve that type of seamless interaction versus a device that simply has conventional technology layered for each device to be purchased for individual reasons."

You say tomato, I say tomato

"¡Viva la Ñ!"

The Wii U GamePad actually displays things slightly ahead of the TV, due to the inherent lag of modern LCD TVs.

All I've ever read is what is posted below you, that Nintendo actually has the gamepad render first. Do you have any video of this or ???

Well the Tekken producer did say there was latency (it is a wireless satellite device after-all), but it was extremely small. That was before they shipped the newer SDK and from what it seems in the that video they help hide the latency by refreshing the tablet first and the primary display second.

Article was written in early Feburary about the time the newer SDKs were rumored to be rolling out.

My mistake the v4 was rolled out about that time.

The v5 "final" kits didn't hit until May/June

Hmm. Either this is a noticeable non-issue or people are blinded by an HD Wii. I initially thought this should only be an add-on instead of a main selling point for Wii U. Shame, as I was actually considering purchasing Wii U close to launch. I will have to wait a few months and hear from a gamers' experience firsthand which hopefully this community can provide.

like seriously its not a big deal. It was probably just the game he was playing cuz that's not what I've noticed.

Been away for a bit, but sneaking back in.

Gaming on: PS4, PC, 3DS. Got a Switch! Mainly to play Smash

Must be specific to ME3 because the video feed to the Wii U GamePad is faster than the display capabilities of most HDTV's.

There have already been several writes up about how amazed people are at how low the Wii U GamePad latency is.
