No one ever mentions Powerstone or Ehrgiez.

Powerstone was amazing on the Dreamcast.  Had a lot of fun playing that freshman year in the dorms.

Cartoon Network Punch Time Explosion

That one had a lot of potentials but it was not done by capable devs.

Destructoid gets ignored because it's a piece of shit garbage site that always goes where the most controversy is because being the Armond White of video games is a massive cash generator. Also, those who are in the Beta have a certain interest in this game succeeding because they are most likely Sony fans if they have gone through the trouble of signing up for a beta. The average run of the mill joe schmoe does not participate in betas. It's the same with Kid Icarus and Gravity Rush, where both camps would SWEAR that those games are legitimate games of the forever and ever.

See what I mean? It's always some sort of conspiracy and you people always have some bogus excuse for why something that goes against your opinion does not count.

Destructoid also isn't only going after controversy, it is Jim Sterling not being a run of the mill joe schmoe reviewer who gives the same regurgitated opinion as everyone else in the media.

All this whining is why gamers are never taken seriously. One day Nintendo fans cry about IGN, then Gamespot, next stop we get Destructoid. Every site is nothing more than an entire group of journalists who have it out for Nintendo.

Of course this only lasts until the day Destructoid gives a Nintendo game a 9/10 or a 10/10, then all of a sudden all is forgiven, like when Skyward Sword was given a 9.5/10. Then when NSMB2 gets a 7/10 it's right back to "Destructoid hates Nintendo!"

Always the same thing. Been that way for years. Every fanbase does it, which is why it is embarassing.

Destructoid's opinion means much more than Hideki Kamiya who never even touched the damn game. Why don't you go shit all over Kamiya? Isn't he obviously just going for the controversial route to bring more attention to his WiiU title?

No. When the game was first shown everybody thought Smash Bros. You, me, the press, Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, everybody. Nobody up to this point can give an explanation why Sony decided to do this game 2D with a Roster full of mascots that have always been 3D because you know what the only conceivable explanation is. They WANT this game to be as similar as possible to Smash. And I'm not after Kamiyas head because it's his opinion and I agree with it. Destructoids opinion is the one that goes against what everyone is thinking when they see the game so theirs is currently the controversial one. That's how controversial is defined.

Ongoing bet with think-man: He wins if MH4 releases in any shape or form on PSV in 2013, I win if it doesn't.

The problem isn't that it is an imitation. The problem is that the denial of imitation.

The Devs admit freely they were inspired by smash brothers, what more do you want from them, a public hanging?

Did it not take the developers a while to admit that they were influenced by SSBB. If I recall correctly, they went out of their way at first to downplay (deny) any SSBB connections.

That benig said, it is not the first game and won't be the last to take this approach.  it will rise and fall on its own.

For example, I found TMNJ: Smash Up a fun and unique take while I found Cartoon Network Punch Time Explosion XL to have poor physics and poor characters and not worth my time. (Ironically, Cartoon Network  probably has more depth.)  --Note both games were played on the Wii and acquired in part to see how they measured up to SSBB (thankfully -- Gamestop takes back used games within 7 days and Cartoon Network was returned).

My main gripe with all of this is that everyone pretends that Smash is the only game within its genre or more accurately is the inventor of said genre...we can all agree it's likely the best but it doesn't mean it should be considered the only one deserving to exist.

Sony and its fans get accused of arrogance but this to me is just as bad.

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

Here is an excellent preview article that might shut a few people up.

Haha, you think that helps anything? We had a thread on that already and people just went ahead and tried to discredit it, yet when someone from Platinum (?),  who is working on P-100 and has never even touched PSASBR claimed the game was a rip-off they all defended it as if the guy actually knew what the hell he was talking about.

Yes, the game is an imitation, but it still tried to do some things differently to try and give it an identity of it's own. Devs do this all the time, but what is annoying is how all these gamers bitch, cry, moan and groan about it.

Seriously people, it's just a video game, lol.

In fairness that wasn't "some guy", it was Hideki Kamiya, who has some serious chops when it comes to cloning and being cloned

Without reading the responses much, I'll throw my two cents in which would probably echo what others have said in the past;

Nintendo is probably one of the most innovative companies out there, not a fan but I admit that. Sony comes close second in terms of games, hardware wise it's really not that much of an improvement, I mean fair enough Wii was pretty much a 6th gen console but they brought the motion gaming to the table, which turned out to be a great bargain, Sony has proceeded to rip it off later on with the innovation of Move, which looks exactly the same but with the ball attached to the end. I think where Sony shines is most likely software, but that again is not up to them, the developers they've nabbed are great at creating cinematic and unique experiences - Heavy Rain, UC, GoW etc. Top notch games, but I can't believe there are people actually in denial that PSA is a rip off of NSMB, it's practically the same concept, which MIGHT vary slightly in execution.

Disconnect and self destruct, one bullet a time.

I'd put it this way. I would suggest... that if somebody saw a screenshot of both games side by side and weren't knowledgeable on video game mascots they would think it was the same game.

Even the preview videos were done stylistically like the Smash brothers ones, as my girlfriend knew what it was copying before it ever got to gameplay, and likely would of just thought it was smash brothers if I didn't say "Hey look at this new sony game."

There is no doubt in my mind they started out with Smash Brothers as a concept, right down to the art and presentation style, and then said "How can we make this different."

and went from there.

That said... who cares? I mean seriously. Either you HATE smash brothers type games... and then who cares.

Or you LOVE smash brothers type games and there are more smash brothers type games. Awesome.

You know what game I wish would get ripped off more? Pokemon. Someone should make a Indy Pokemon type game for PC. That would rule.

Blatant ripoffs is more or less how we get new Genres.

I mean where would we be right now if nobody ripped off John Carmack?

Its a ripoff the same way CoD and BF is a ripoff from the first shooter: wolfenstein.

Dont matter though, since All Stars plays so much better than Brawl in the beta.

A) Wolfenstein isn't the first shooter.  Just the first popular one, cause Carmack did a lot right.

B) I'd say it was more like contemporary shooters ripping off Wolfenstein.

Wolfenstein eventually got ripped off enough that FPS became a genre.

Smash brothers hasn't remotely been ripped off enough for it to be considered a genre yet.

I can't see any problem here.

If the game is good nothing more matter... rip-off or not.
