I don't get why journalists are so fearful of Apple getting into the gaming biz. They're all about casual use: iPhone, iPad, iPod - they're all very simple to use. Hardcore games are by definition NOT easy to use/play! It's H-A-R-D C-O-R-E. they might make a casual console (like the Wii was/is) but they'd rely souly on 3rd party: no core gamer would abandon NinSonySoft for some fruit ninjas or angry birds console. That piece of shit really would be a piece of shit console.

I think it's because Sony's business model has always required them to sell to the masses - casual and hardcore - in order to work. PS1 and PS2 were very profitable - because they sold over 100M units each. PS3 is still on pace to lose money throughout the course of it's life (or it MAY break even by the end). Which is crazy for a system that's sold 65M units, and likely to sell 100M. The 360 overall is likely to be more profitable than the PS1 or PS2, but it will never eclipse, or even approach, their total unit sales. Were apple to throw their hat into the ring, it erodes Sony's marketshare even further - something their business model's have been thus far unable to handle.

I don't think the 360 will be more profitable than PS1 or 2: first off, they were sold at a lose for the first years, and secondly: RROD cost MS half a BILLION dollars or something like that... But that's not the point we're talking about =)

I imagen a console from Apple would almost only get casual gamers, and that's not where the big money is at in gaming. Sure, they'd sell a ton of console, but fewer games (think "Wii"), and definetly not hardcore games. Well, not much of 'em anyways. Sure, that would leave Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo to fight over the core gamers - and one of those could surely go, but the market wouldn't be much different than how this generation has been.

Danne, did you miss the part where they were saying Konami, Capcom and Square were defecting to mobile devices for revenue?

That's not what I would call PoS-level developers.

And I never said they were. I said that angry birds is a piece of shit (even if it's fun to play at times doesn't make it any less shitty) and a console that only has that sort of games wouldn't get games of the quality like Uncharted, Mario Galaxy, God of War, Gears of War and other current gen hits. That console would be stuck with angry birds, the smurfs and what not. Would YOU buy a console for $600 (knowing Apple that's about the right price ;P) just to play some angry birds? Really? No. No, of course not. Casual gamers might, and that's the market share that would grab an Apple console - NOT the fans of Mario and Link. They'd take a huge dump on it.

But I just said, Konami, Capcom and Square will be making more games there and shifting their business to those platforms. Why no mention of Final Fantasy in your mobile games lists, Metal Gear, Megaman? Why just Angry Birds?

Just revise your PoV and ask me the question again, I may have a more interesting answer.

Yeah, but I don't believe they'll stop producing hardcore titles? And seriously, you won't be able to play quality games on phones. I mean, really. I tried Sonic on android this very day. It sucked ass. I love the original early 90's Sonic - but this was really bad; my THUMB covered half the screen!!

Let me ask you this; do you think Apple would ever be able to attrac hardcore gamers to their possible console, and if so - how? I don't think it's very plausible.

Easiest answer? JRPGs. They're fully playable on a tablet. This is without even considering the Ouya.

So a possible Apple console would attract JRPG fans, but is that enough? Would that be enough to take down either of "the Big 3"? Would it be enough to lure more than just casual gamers?

It sure was enough to take down the N64, mind you that was another time.

However in Japan this could easily be a threat, yep.

It's like you said; it's a different time now. Very few 3rd party titles are exclusive nowadays, which would mean that almost every JRPG would be available on other consoles, which in turn would render an Apple console useless for core gamers since there would be no other core games on it. So I still fail to see the point where an Apple console would damage the hardcore market =)

:) That's not really what I meant by "it's a different time". I meant more about JRPGs not being as dominant and industry-swaying a genre as it was 20-15 years ago.

As for multiplatforming, I don't think we really see that with handhelds just yet, take FFIV as an example. Two completely different takes released at different times for the DS versus the PSP. Also, why would they waste time porting if the game makes so much money already on mobile platforms?

Tablets and iphones arent really impacting consoles folks.

They are however taking a big chunk out of handhelds
