However in Japan this could easily be a threat, yep.

It's like you said; it's a different time now. Very few 3rd party titles are exclusive nowadays, which would mean that almost every JRPG would be available on other consoles, which in turn would render an Apple console useless for core gamers since there would be no other core games on it. So I still fail to see the point where an Apple console would damage the hardcore market =)
