I don't know.... why would NSMB2 flop like this though?  I feel like digital sales would explain it.

NSMB2 is not a flop. It is above 600k in just two weeks. Many games would kill to do half of that.

Anyway. The coin collecting focus seems more like a spinoff than a "mainline" one. Also, I remember not everyone was happy with the first DS game.

A relative flop, by 2D Mario standards.

Because that game sucked and was universally panned to the extent that Sqauare had to issue an official apology to fans.  But you didn't answer my question so I'll ask you again:

Was Final Fantasy XI a flop?

It was definetly a flop userbase wise, going from a big userbase of FFX to such a small userbase. But business wise it wasn't since its still making them money.

You need to start distinguishing between non-MMO and MMO RPG installments.  They require a different metric of success and you seem to agree based on what you said.  "Business wise" is what matters for an MMO.  FFXI was not a flop by any means if it made Square tons of money vis-a-vis subscriptions.

Therefore, saying DQX did horrible for a DQ game (not an MMO game) is a little silly given that we won't know how well it's done until a long time from now.  But I understand why you would choose to look at DQX's first week as an ordinary DQ entry rather than an MMO entry... ;)

FF XI only survived thanks to PC version. With only PS2 sales numbers it would have quickly disappeared, servers would have been closed after just few months. Using PS2 numbers as a metric is not reasonable because around 70-80% of the subscriptions were probably from PC version, even in Japan.

waiting for the release of FFXIV ver 2.0 on ps3 to compare with DQX launch

I predict 100k sales - combined!

BTW, about your previous question: I really don't know about Senran Kagura, as it's just an updated version. But I expect for Soul Hackers something in the 60-70k zone FW. Reasons 1, SMT4 first look, Reason 2, being the first after the Mario drought 3DS is going to go through.

People forget, but this is a Wii game. Seriously, no Wii game has any shot of being huge anymore! The market literally imploded. Add this to the fact that it is the worst console for MMO - worse online and it's a very hardcore genre. This game will launch twice, trust me. Wii U launch will be at minimum as big as this one.

Look at Mario Party 9 sales now... seems great, right? Now go look at the first Wii Mario Party game

Series fatigue. When NSMB came out, it was revolutionary. Also the Mega Mushroom made the game larger than life. The Wii version was good because it added 4 players and improved graphics. This version I don't see add too much more other than the new coin mechanics. So possibly consumer fatigue. Like someone said in gaf, had it been NSMW, it may have been a different story.

However, I personally think the digital sales will be strong for the reason Mr Khan gave, and others I gave in last week's thread, including the massively available retail vouchers for DD.

So it's honestly up in the air at this point, and can go either way.

I'm with you all the way here! Collecting 1 milion coins isn't enough to keep the series fresh! I've thought all along that they should change the art style amongst other things to keep it relevant (not that THAT is the biggest problems).

I think the digital sales for these two weeks will be around 100-200k...

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

When is DQX releasing for the WiiU?

For a moment I thought you were answering my Hatsune Miku question.

Anyway, I say this is the best version of Senran Kagura which includes two games (new and updated old), so it might do somewhere around the first game's levels.

I agree with Soul Hackers.
