Share your first memory of a PlayStation product!

Coming home from school aged about 6 and seeing my dad playing on the Playstation.  Demo 1 disk.  The original Demo 1, the one with this music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_DUKZ5cjmIU.

Saw him play Battle Arena Toshinden and Jumping Flash.  Then he let me have a go.  Was all uphill after that :D

Nah, we don't want to overshadow Sony's accomplishment or start a flame war or anything. Maybe the next time Nintendo hits a major milestone, but today, in this thread, it's aaallllll about PlayStation. :)

Hmm, well I am pretty sure that's a mistake (unless Sony started selling new PS1s in the last 2 years) Sony's own websites ended PS2 shipments at 102.49m in FY2005 (they took the info down a couple of years ago though, and annoyingly PS1 is not in their historical figures)

Not sure on the PS2 figure but the shipment figure is actually just short of 158 million... I am not certain if that is a mixture of sales (read shipments to retailers) and "production shipments" though, which would warp the numbers a little around 2000 and 2007 when Sony switched reporting figures (ie a couple of million consoles may be counted twice in the number... still should be over 154m though)

No, I agree with you, if I were doing it I'd just use the official Sony figures.  But it's kind of a different issue because it's the VGChartz database that needs updating, or maybe not if it knows something we don't.

Well unless ioi knows something we don't, the PS1 figure is definately a mistake... I just totted up the shipment figures (Sony handily gave a cumulative number through FY2000, then I had to add each year) and it came handily to the 102.49 million figure.

The VGC PS2 figure is meant to be lower than the shipment figure because PS2 is still active... it's the content of Sony's shipment figures that I am unsure of because they kept swapping between reporting sales (which are actually shipments to retail) and "production shipments" which is an internal tracking method, and it's possible that during the transitions between the two methods consoles get counted twice... it is also possible that "production shipments" include all created machines, which means any Sony sent out as replacements for faulty models would also be counted.

Then it's about 630 million. Home consoles only are about 260 if my memory serves, didn't bother to check .

Congrats on the milestone. It's pretty impressive.

But sadly I think it'll be a long time before the 500 gets passed. The PlayStation brand has probably peaked, and will never again reach the success of PS1 and especially PS2. I don't mean to sound pessimistic, I mean even though I'm primarily a Nintendo fan, PlayStation is one of the only consoles 'worthy' in my eyes to reach milestones like this.

Voted for 2020, but it could also be 2019; The PS3'll do another 20 million units, the Vita won't get past 20. And it'll take a very long time also, I just don't see it happen. Assuming the PS4 releases in 2014 at the latest and also lives 6 years, so you have 400 + 20 + 18 + (PS4sales which would be about 70) in the next 8 years give or take. Sounds like a reasonable prediction to me!

i see the lot of us are lazy these days lol.

yee of little faith. believe and it will come to fruition. it's good to think that while not knowing, cause that of the future has yet to be revealed.

fairly reasonable though lol.
