Why do you keep saying final nail?

Because that's what the doom sayers kept saying when the ps3 wasn't doing well. Anything bad happens, someone will always say "Final nail" (in the coffin of the ps3) and that it's going to be discontinued. But here we are and it's still going strong.

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

I'm not sure I'd say that any of the current home consoles are "still going strong." But I would say that for this late in the generation it's impressive how well the Xbox 360 and PS3 are doing. It's also impressive how the PS3 was able to come back from such a difficult start and how far the Xbox brand has expanded up against such heavy hitters like Nintendo and Sony. There's isn't much impressive about Nintendo right now, but it's possible that the Wii U could be a hit later this year. We will see.

Congratz PS!

I didn't mean now, I meant earlier n the ps3's life

That's quite a milestone!

And that made me think about the Nintendo family, from the same time the PSX released obviously:

DS-152.33
Wii- 96.37
GBA- 81.51
N64- 32.93
GB- 21.74
3DS- 18.58

Total- 403.46

So that's actually pretty darn close! The question is now- Will Sony be able to catch Nintendo again (likely they 'lost' the lead this year, or late last), or will Ninty just pull away?

Where are you getting the GB figures from?

I don't know what it shipped prior to FY ending March 1998, but from then till it (well it will be mostly GBColor, but Ninty classes it as the same machine) died it shipped over 64 million... and that's missing FY2006 & 7, which were both after PSX launch (probably around 10 million each for those years too)

Also from April 97 onwards SNES shipped almost 4 million, and NES 70k... SNES at least probably shipped close to 10 million in the previous 2 years, NES admitedly not enough to count for much, maybe a million at most.

I guess discounting NES and SNES is understandable, as despite their continued selling they fit into a time before the PSX, but certainly all GBColors should be counted, which is over 60 million.

As for Sony catching Nintendo, if your GB number had been correct (assuming I am not missing a reason it is meant to be so low) Sony would actually be in the lead already if using shipment figures, and while still a little behind in sales the last quarter shows they are currently shipping more hardware overall (though I think they would have to have a 2-3 million selling advantage next quarter to surpass Nintendo before the Wii U releases)

Yeah, those guys are singing a different tune now. Sony always crushes their dreams. I enjoy reading what them dudes had to say 4 5 years ago on forums, a good source for laughter.

The guys that voted 2020 would probably vote never if I gave them the option. PS3+PS4+PSV won't add another 100m? lol.

I wouldn't. If Sony and PlayStation survives (I'd like them to, and they probably will), it's obvious the brand will reach 500 at some point.

I voted 2020, but mentioned it could be 2019, if all goes well. I don't really see it any sooner, explained by my math in the other post. I actually think you should've included some later dates in the poll.

i see the lot of us are lazy these days lol.

yee of little faith. believe and it will come to fruition. it's good to think that while not knowing, cause that of the future has yet to be revealed.

fairly reasonable though lol.

I'd love to be proven wrong, I really do. But even though the PS3 still does adequite this late in the Gen, I think there is a downward trend. We'll just have to see how PS4 will do when it gets released! The same goes for the Wii U and Nintendo's current upwards trend.

congrats, sony. you definitely changed console-gaming! sony opened console-gaming to a broader audience, the "grown-ups". yes, even back in those old days grown-ups played nintendo and sega but the games became just more different than then.
i hope that they can keep up the competition for at least one generation (meaning there will be only one next generation) because this will result in better games for all of us.

500M could be reached during 2018. Between less than 19M/year and less than 16M/year (by the end of 2012 the total should be > 405M, leaving less than 95M to be sold in 5-6 years) overall home + portable consoles isn't a result out of this world, if PSV sales eventually better I'd say it's more than reasonable.
