Forums - Sony - PlayStation ecosystem passess 400 milion units sold. Celebration time!

When will PlayStation family hit 500m?

2016 17 22.67%

2017 13 17.33%

2018 19 25.33%

2019 1 1.33%

2020 25 33.33%

Total:75

^ I voted 2018. Seems reasonable to me. PS3 has a lot of life left, might even exceed 100 mil. I don't see Vita falling short of 40 mil; if Sony feels like that's going to be the case, I think they'll make a drastic change to make it sell. Add early PS4 sales and I see it around 2017-18.

That's great news! Congrats Sony :D

I was going to make a joke about the Mario franchise but... Congrats to Sony, one always feels like a boss saying FOUR HUNDRED MILLION, it's cool, and you don't reach that number every day :) - when is the party? :D

Kaz is already celebrating in a strip club.

The guys that voted 2020 would probably vote never if I gave them the option. PS3+PS4+PSV won't add another 100m? lol.

Final nail

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

Xbox One: What are you doing Dave?

Why do you keep saying final nail?

Not all of them, as the Vita isn't yet showing a fast selling future, but yeah probably most.

I voted 2018 but I think it's possible in 2017 (well actually 2015 is probably possible in a best case scenario if Sony get the PS4 right)

That's quite a milestone!

And that made me think about the Nintendo family, from the same time the PSX released obviously:

DS-152.33
Wii- 96.37
GBA- 81.51
N64- 32.93
GB- 21.74
3DS- 18.58

Total- 403.46

So that's actually pretty darn close! The question is now- Will Sony be able to catch Nintendo again (likely they 'lost' the lead this year, or late last), or will Ninty just pull away?

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

"1 people out of every 14 on this planet will own a PlayStation."

How do you come up with that?

You are assuming that every Playstation branded device as a unique owner.

More than likely the vast majority of PSX owners bought a PS2 and then a PS3 and maybe a PSP or Vita. Since the PS3 hasn't sold as much as the PS2 It's also likely that most of the PS3 owners are also PS2 owners. If there are 400 million Playstation branded devices out there, and the PS2 sold a lifetime of 154 million, I'd estimate there have been around 200 to 250 million PS owners between 1995 and 2012. Therefore I would estimate on, the high end,  250m out of 7b which would be about 1 out of every 28 people.

That's impressive, however I'd say it's still very inflated.

Now if you figure in Nintendo, Atari, PC, Xbox, Mobile, Browser, etc it's very possible that more people play games than not.
