It is? I'd be inclined to think that Vita's userbase is much more digitalized than the 3DS's. Nintendo are not known for digital distribution after all and Mario is a title that appeals to casuals (as well as hardcore gamers) which lessens the likelihood of good digital sales even more. Tell me again why this is not good? We are of course talking about relative numbers here, if you didn't get that already.
There has to be someone to counter all the over-expectations.

Depending on what you and others mean by "casual" -- I believe it is actually the "core" console gamers who are against digital distribution. Here on VGChartz and in gaming forums all over the net, I see people saying they want to keep buying physical products. Meanwhile, "casual" gamers are already very accustomed to buying digital games on the iTunes App Store (though this may not be the case in Japan as much as it is in the West).
In other words, given a choice to buy games physically or digitally, I believe "casual" gamers are more likely to buy digitally than "core" gamers. Nintendo also pushed digital very hard in their marketing, offering double the Club Nintendo coins for buying digitally. We'll see whether that pays off for them.
You are right about the last bit, though. Someone has to be pessimistic enough to keep our expectations in check.
