This just in, Banjo is alive and well at Microsoft:

For 160 ms points he could be yours right now!

Oh yay! That makes up for everything!

it's funny because some people really believe that even it have "kinect games no one buying" thing in article
if Rare's "real game"(7 titles before KS) sales really good MS would not turn them to make KS,and KS is best selling Rare title since MS bought them

Wow just what Nintendo needs another Jump´n Run game.

Its called a plaftformer. Its a genre, and I would rasther see more of those than another miliary shooter.

Nintendo has enough of those. A military shooter from them would bring some diversity

Nintendo doesn't need a military shooter to survive. They are better than that.

Indeed, they survive relying on Mario.

Sorry, Nintendo isnt Microsoft. They need variety, not shooters. I agree Mario is a crutch, but so is Zelda, Donkey Kong, Kirby, Metroid and others spanning various genres. It's not a new genre Nintendo needs, but a new character with a new story suitable for a new generation. They need to brainstorm this long and hard for next gen.

Halo Wars, Fable, Crackdown, Forza, Banjo Kazooie Nuts & Bolts, Viva Pinata, Kameo, Kinect Sports, Kinectimals, Joyride, Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Splosion Man, ilomilo, Hydro Thunder, Crimson Alliance... any of these games ring any bells? MS also published some notable exclusives like Dance Central, Shadow Complex, Trials, etc.

Perhaps if you thought about it for two seconds, variety is not a problem. NIntendo fans haven't exactly shown they want variety. NO brainstorm required, just more Mario, Donkey Kong, and Zelda. Essentially the same stuff we played throughout the 80s and 90s with few changes.

Lots of names but nowhere on Nintendos quality. If Nintendo gets some Rare IP's back some quality will be restored. It's been a dream of mine that Retro Studios would get one of the Rare titles in their clutches like Banjo, Battletoads or . No offense, Microsoft will not suffice, so hopefully they give up the franchises they never brought to the dance. The old members who worked with Microsoft in almost a freelance capacity can get some creative control with Retro Studios and having Nintendo as a watchful eye with Miyamoto to oversee quality. Perfect Dark with the Wii U would be sick. I know Nintendo is in talks with Namco Bandai about SSMB, but they could also talk to them about Killer  Instinct if they could secure the rights.

wise words.

I remember when news channels use to report that excessive gaming was bad for you as you would get the Nintendo thumb after excessive play of killer instinct lol.

I also agree that nintendo needs to come up with new IPs. bringing these back would instantlt win oiginal fans over and give them time to think of  a good new IP or two.

You never stay on topic.

Quality is subjective. You can't make a valid argument proving Nintendo produces higher quality software. But its fair to say they both have quality software.

Either way, quality wasn't your argument. Its your argument now because you don't want to admit you made an untrue statement. MS clearly has offered plenty of variety throughout this gen.

Why would MS give up any IPs? I don't see Nintendo or Sony doing that. But MS would because they aren't using them? Ridiculous.

MS has done just fine without relying on old IPs. If MS really has interest in bringing back classic IPs, I'm sure plenty of 3rd party studios would be happy to do the work. It doesn't necessarily need to be done by Rare.

GE is never gonna happen. Acti has to rights to anything having to do with the 007 franchise. Not sure about KI

I can't see this happening at all, but I'm not going to deny that I'd be overjoyed if it actually did.

VGChartz

yeah yeah and Sony is buying the Crash IP back...if dreams just were there to becoming true...

What has happened to Rare is often blamed on Microsoft, but they should realize that Rare split into 3 during the purchase

  • Graphic / art talent stayed as Rare and with Microsoft
  • Technical talent left to form Free Radical and made awesome Timesplitters games, and are now Crytek who spend time time making those Crysis games
  • Zoonami was the game design talent and I think have yet to release any game since it was formed right around the split
Nintendo getting Rare back wont necessarily make Rare back into what it used to be because so much of what made Rare, well rare... was the mix of talent that existed and worked so well together.

MS's fault was trying to enforce their way of doing things on Rare. A number of ex-Rare employees who left some time after MS bought them have said as much.

Meanwhile, the idea of Nintendo getting Rare back is enticing because of the graphic/art talent. Retro can provide the technical talent, and Nintendo themselves are the kings of game design.

The other thing to notice is that Rare is British, and Nintendo currently, to my knowledge, doesn't have any first-party British studios.

But here's my theory, assuming that this isn't just a stupid false rumour: Nintendo want to buy Rare in order to put them to work on their Wii ___ line of games. They probably figure that a western fantastic (as opposed to realistic) graphical aesthetic would help to make it even more popular, and it makes optimal use of the graphical/art talent in Rare without having to be too concerned with technical talent (Nintendo can still provide the game design). And in buying Rare, they'd be getting Rare's IPs back (according to the rumour), which they can give to certain studios to work with.

Perfect Dark and Banjo Kazooie could both go to Retro. Killer Instinct could be given out to Capcom or Namco Bandai to develop. Jet Force Gemini and Blast Corps could be handed to, say, Headstrong Games. Conker could be handed off to, say, Rockstar Leeds.

To have them on Virtual Console isn't entirely out of the question. The reason why they haven't made it onto the VC right now is the web of IP involved, and getting MS and Activision (and possibly EA) to sign off on it, etc. If MS sold Rare back to Nintendo, then that would significantly simplify the web.

The biggest remaining issue would be getting Activision's OK... and the thing standing in the way of that is Activision's remake, which they might fear would have the original on VC as competition. But they'd be much more open to it, I'd imagine, for Wii U.

Killer Instinct, as far as I can see, is only being blocked by Microsoft, so if Nintendo got it back, there'd be no real impediment to publishing it on VC.
