Nintendo getting Rare back wont necessarily make Rare back into what it used to be because so much of what made Rare, well rare... was the mix of talent that existed and worked so well together.

MS's fault was trying to enforce their way of doing things on Rare. A number of ex-Rare employees who left some time after MS bought them have said as much.
Meanwhile, the idea of Nintendo getting Rare back is enticing because of the graphic/art talent. Retro can provide the technical talent, and Nintendo themselves are the kings of game design.
The other thing to notice is that Rare is British, and Nintendo currently, to my knowledge, doesn't have any first-party British studios.
But here's my theory, assuming that this isn't just a stupid false rumour: Nintendo want to buy Rare in order to put them to work on their Wii ___ line of games. They probably figure that a western fantastic (as opposed to realistic) graphical aesthetic would help to make it even more popular, and it makes optimal use of the graphical/art talent in Rare without having to be too concerned with technical talent (Nintendo can still provide the game design). And in buying Rare, they'd be getting Rare's IPs back (according to the rumour), which they can give to certain studios to work with.
Perfect Dark and Banjo Kazooie could both go to Retro. Killer Instinct could be given out to Capcom or Namco Bandai to develop. Jet Force Gemini and Blast Corps could be handed to, say, Headstrong Games. Conker could be handed off to, say, Rockstar Leeds.
