Forums - Gaming - Is Cloud gaming the future?

From my understanding the way Cloud gaming works is you have a huge list of games and can play any of them instantly by streaming, that means no installs on your console, no waiting to play the game, no need to deal with updates etc (Please correct me if I wrong on anything).

So with that understanding it's fixing a lot of issues we have with the 7th generation. Could Cloud gaming be the next way of gaming? It seems awfully enticing.

Yes, but give it a few years

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

All we can know for sure is that the future of gaming looks very cloudy.

Not anytime soon.

Well I use OnLive pretty regularly. I think its awesome being able to play high end games with no big install and on any PC with a decent processor. Some games you can even play on tablets and smart phones.

The biggest issue is bandwidth speeds required. Ideally I think a lot of people would like to use OnLive away from home. But hot spots rarely if ever give you the bandwidth you need.

:)

It does promise alot, but I personally wish content providers will guarantee the game availability in some form after the service is stopped for whatever reason.

Ill be waiting. Possibly in a decade.

Yay!!!

No. Not to me, at all.

For the immediate future, I sure hope not.

I was hearing about Gaikai in the news so I popped onto the site and tried playing some Crysis 2 and the streaming quality was awful. To be clear, it said my connection was great. It was like watching a low res video on YouTube. I saw compression artifacts and the picture was blurry. Even if the streaming quality were better, I bet that I'd still have an issue because it's only playing the game at 720p when my monitor is 1080p so scaling it up to see more would affect it. What also hurt the experience was the delay when trying to control the game. There was a very noticeable delay when trying to look around at the environment.

Don't know how OnLive compares though.

I would like cloud gaming to get a much wider breadth of games under my belt, but I would never use cloud to play the games I absolutely loved. Those are games I want to come back to 10 years from now without worries of servers being up, etc.
