Forums - Gaming - EA: "We're Going 100% Digital"

Why do gamers dislike the move to digital so much? Do you guys still buy physical CDs to listen to music on, or do you enjoy having all your music collection on your HDD?

I know many people are afraid of restrictions and shit that publishers try to push on people when playing digital games, but I have also seen many people outright show disdain for digital in general.

Why?

both i like choice , CD's since i can transfer my CD to HDD and use the CD as a back up , and in my car , Digital because I can purchase a single song or songs rather than an album , my problem isn't so much with digital it is with total digital and with EA it's not just total but totaldigital on EA's terms.

Research shows Video games  help make you smarter, so why am I an idiot

You can´t compare that to music. I have a very small HDD and don´t want to downlad 20GB games every time I buy a copy. And especailly games like Fifa, which I buy for my PS3 there I only have 80GB and don´t wanna download und delete it all the time.

And btw. whats wrong with retail anyway, it is much cheaper.

Digital gaming is alot more cheaper most of the time (look at steam), even online retail is cheaper than actual retail xD.

You can always negotiate at Gamestop. And always find online offers that are much better then on Steam and Origin. I bought The Witcher 2 for 14,99€ on Amazon, and got Xenoblade for 19,99€ at Gamestop (my Ex Gf helped a bit).

Good news. A fair amount of people dont like digital gaming, but also, a fair amount of people do like digital gaming. So giving everyone options is great. Im extremely confident they won't leave the retail market.

But it leads us to believe then that they will go 0% retail (from what I understood in the article). That's not really exciting on the long run, but the worst would be going 100% streaming, 0% DL games, 0% retail, as we lose ownership of our games.

That doesn't seem likely. They probably meant 100% of their games will be available digitally. Like Sony did with Vita games. Just because you go digital doesn't mean you leave retail.

I know Jay, that's why I said "it leads us to believe". The way it's said made it seem like that was their goal. Aren't they already 100% digital anyways with Origin?

Cost-per-gigabyte is dropping rapidly. Within a year or so, most consumers will have over a terabyte of storage. Consoles will also be hitting the 1tb early on in their life cycle, if not at launch (MS and Sony, anyway).

Believe it or not, when MP3s started coming out, most portable devices only had between 32 and 64mb of memory. How many songs is that? 8, 16? Things change rapidly.

You can´t compare, the converting of a MP3 file and shrinking a game. A game is not just one file, and they are getting bigger instead of smaller. 10 years ago there where almost no games bigger then 1GB.

The problem is IPS download caps. A lot of them have DL caps. Also in the US at least, there are a lot of people who have consoles who never take them on line.

I think these folks are saying that digital will be an option for 100% of their games, soon.

Like you'd be able to download Madden 15 the same day as it's bought from a store, for instance.

This is the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.

If that is what they plan to do, I am all for it. I think all companies should give this option.

I don't think you frequent amazon digital download services or steam too often. Nearly every single game will eventually be sold for $5-10 in some sale, often less than a year after release.

And when I mean nearly any I mean the only exceptions that I can think of are Blizzard games and the Sims games.

With few exceptions, the only retail games you will ever find for $5 new are overshipped terrible ones such as duke nukem and brink.

Good. That means more space for quality titles on our local retailer's shelves.

JK, I occasionally support some of their franchises and the physical copies will be dearly missed.

Rofl!!! Great post THE1.
