This is like Naughty Dogs saying "GAEMZ NOWADAYS ARE TOO CINEMATIC AND LINEAR!" , this guy is one of the main reasons games are linear and crap nowadays.

“When I played this in 4-player co-op… I mean, I’ve been playing Gears since the beginning of the course and I really have to hunker down and focus, and if my buddies aren’t reviving me, and we aren’t working as a team, you’re going to die, and it’s okay to die a few times in a game to try some different strategies, the S3 respawn system [Ed - as referenced in our preview] provides unique challenges.”

yeah thats... just like every other gears, and he is making it the same and still complain why games are crap, its the same old crap.

i don't see your point, i do not need to edit my posts

what exactly does this have to do with "the same game"? because you can still play with friends and revive them? he is saying that even when he played gears since the beginning, this new gears is different and you have to focus much more and bla and you make out of it "it is the same"

he is talking about a new spawn system which i have no clue how it will work and that this will change the experience. you even quoted it. he is saying you really have to work as team. in the past gear games, i didn't have the feeling you have to play as real team. it was enough when everybody watched for himself an played a little bit as team but not that real teamwork was necessary.

I think he read the OP, but he already had his response established when he read the title.

Looks at Gears of War 2 and 3 as well as Bulletstorm.

You are one hypocritical fuck who's studio is contributing to it Beszinski.

@ Slimebeast Most of you guys that complain about the videos in the games are the guys older than 30. Just something I noticed. This gen is the best Sir. I think stories like that are a must in many games to make them better than ever. There are plenty of simple oldschool arcade games out there.

No amount of complaining is going to change it, either. And still, there are MANY titles that are traditional as well as lacking any kind of "Hollywood" feel. I say if it's not your thing, move on and try something different. There's plenty of variety to go around, despite much of the "copycatting".

Between all the games on arcade, psn and items such as the iphone I do feel people complain too much. You are correct though as the complaining does nothing more than allow a place to vent, but it gets quite annoying when there are plenty of us that like the direction these "Hollywood" games are going, and who feel positive they will only get better. It is good to counter negativity with others passion and curiosity for the future. I will not stop!!!

the man is just doing some PR bull to hype up the next game. it should obvious as his games in the past are exactly the things he complains about

and my money on the fact that the next Gears will be the same as well

It's funny. You complain about people causing trouble in threads meant to be positive, yet that's what you're doing here. Cliff says he wants to try and makes games less linear & easy. And he plans to do so with his next Gears of War game. And you come in here just say his words are bull? WTF! Regardless of if what he's saying is true or not, you somehow can see the ulterior motives that we can't?

But what's really funny is how you say you think the next Gears game will be the same as the last ones. Even though Cliff says he's trying to do the exact opposite, you can somehow read his mind and tell he's lying? LOL, how do you know this.

No no better question: why do you care? Why do you care to come into a positive thread about a guy who says he's improving his games, only to say "nah, I bet Gears will be the same". For someone whos always talking about people entering threads just to troll, your post in this thread sure is hipocritical. You're trying to squeeze out bad news that's not even there.

not sure why you are so angry about this and I was perfectly on topic. I also don't see how PR is 'positive' news. He (among almost all devs) say stuff like this when they have a game coming up. Doesn't mean anything, especially if their track record says other wise.

None of the Gears games (I admit I have yet to only play a very brief portion of the third Gears) and Bulletstorm have reflected his concerns. So excuse me if I'm skeptical about it. IF he actually delivers on the next gears game as to something different, I will be one of the first in line to say so and praise him.

My post was not a negative one but one that shows I have no faith in the guy. I am not trolling if not trust me it would be much much easier to do so when it comes cliff. Btw don't misunderstand, I have no beef against linear games if they are done well. I had a blast with bulletstorm (enjoyed it way more than any of the gears games)

Anywho time will tell if I'm wrong or not. I say take PR with a sea of salt, until he has shown that he can back up them up.

Ironic that his flagship series is one of the prime offenders of this complaint

I swear some of you people are mentally handicapped. Cliff tells his problems with the industry and how he hopes to change it. Why do you people come in here trying to invalidate his comments by referencing past Gears of War games? Yes, Cliff has been a part of the movement he's scorning. That doesn't make him a hipocrite. He never said Gears of War were never easy & linear. For fuck's sake, the guy's not saying he's exempt from this trend.

The fact that he's trying to make the Gears series harder and more open implies that he knows the Gears games have been too easy/linear. That's not the point. He's not trying to prove that Gears of War doesn't follow this trend. His point is developers (himself included) need to acknowledge that they're headed down a bad path & should make an effort to change that. This is about what he plans to do in the future, not the mistakes he made in the past. He's trying to change that.

Anyway, I somewhat agree with the guy. Yeah, games have higher difficulty settings, but most of the time, this just cheapens the Ai, gives you less health, ect. The core difficulty is still the same, you just stay in cover a bit longer than normal. There's no extra thinking involved, only a bit more skill. You mighy follow the exact same path as the easier difficulties, but instead you spend a few seconds less in the open, or you may get more enemies to kill. Cheap shit like that.

For example, I was playing CoD the other day, and just for kicks, I tried playing on Veteran, and let me tell you, the game got hard. But not in the good way, it was incredibly cheap. The enemies did the exact same movements, same patterns, same tactics, ect. The only difference was they killed you a whole lot quicker. Their gaccuracy was perfect and if you're in their sights for a half of a second, they will kill you. The very moment you pop out of cover, you're getting pumped full of bullets & nearly dead.

The AI was a lot more cheap. Enemies popping out behind windows, walls, ect the moment you cross their designated trigger point. And it was impossible to get through a level without dying on it multiple times. Because you didn't know which object the enemies would pop out from. And as soon as the popped out, they kill you within a second. No one has reflexes fast enough to see, aim and shoot at an enemy that fast. So the only way to complete a level would be by pre-aiming at the objects you know the enemies are hiding at because you've died a few times already.

Too many times, this is what developers do to add difficulty. They make the game incredibly cheap. When you die, it's because there was some cheap sequence that you didn't know about & didn't have time to react to. Not because you didn't play well. You have to learn each level's unique setpieces & trigger scenes before actually having a chance at beating the level. This isn't difficulty. You don't have to think any harder. You just go through the motions, reacting hopefully fast enough. It's cheap.

Great post.

I like that you bring out the issue with difficulty levels in modern games. I play nearly all of my games on hard nowadays and while that definitely helps me getting a more challenging, engaging experience it's far from that simple. You usually feel that the game was still designed around normal diffuclty and they just tweaked a few basic stats to artificially achieve higher difficulties. You often end up with the feeling you describe, that the game is cheap, that the game fucking cheats. And sometimes while playing this frustrating experience you realize that the game at the same time still holds your hand by these typical visual and audio clues of where to go, what to do etc.

Difficulty and challenge is a much bigger thing than just how many health points and damage you have versus your enemy. It's also determined by level design, handholding (or lack thereof), AI and other things.

yeah as example i would love to see uncharted on easy with climbing like it is and on hard, climbing should be much harder. you really should need skill to climb and not only pushing some buttons and the rest works from alone. and if you fall down plenty of times, who cares? that's why i play it on a hard difficulty, to have a harder game and not only less health points or better aiming bots.

sometimes I like it like that and sometimes i don't

Been away for a bit, but sneaking back in.

Gaming on: PS4, PC, 3DS. Got a Switch! Mainly to play Smash

I'm glad to see people like Eric B realizing this 'movification' of games is a dead-end street. I'm a real old school gamer and personally I hate how games are progressively becoming more interactive movies than games.

You should want to replay a game over and over simply because it was so much fun and so rewarding to do so but most games nowadays you run through once and then they rely on multiplayer to add replay value.

lol isn't gears basically roll, snap to cover, shoot and repeat?

isn't that exactly why he said they will change some stuff now, like cranking up the difficulty and other things like the spawn system? i believe that's what he is trying to tell us, the next gears will be more challenging except for the easy difficulty and we will see more possible ways to play it. he said something like:

"i played gears from the beginning and still, i really have to concentrate now playing the new gears"

which means

"the next gears will be much better as what i expect from games as the other gears were"

regardless, is it wrong to say that his comments are ironic? because thats all i'm saying
