I don't think I have seen a single game on the 360 that I would consider a bad looking game. .

Yeah, too many developers think that when working on consoles, they must push the console as far as they can. I don't find this philosophy smart at all. You don't have to push the current gen consoles at all and your games can still look great. I don't think in most cases, it's worth trying to increase a game's graphics from fair to excellent as the mass market doesn't care & the core won't either, if the game is good. Nine times out of ten, you're not going to get more sales for having excellent graphics over decent graphics, either.

gamplay is far more important but i do very much enjoy amazing graphics.. so for me its 60/40 split :/

Nah homie, I think some SNES and PS1 jRPGs have the best storylines ever in a videogame, I love them. Chrono Trigger/Cross, FF7 and the likes are one of my fave games eva

Make sure to play them on decent platforms, with 1080p and Pete's shaders some PS1 games look like early PS2 games.

Then buy a PC and game on it an not console and stfu.

it depends which games and you can also play games with "bad" graphics and have fun but everyone who has played a game with great graphics which wouldn't be possible on last gen and thought "omg that looks so good" knows that graphics can push a game a lot even if it would be good without that.

just look at the impressive god of war boss fighs and how many times do people think "omfg that looks so awesome"? sure it would be fun with worse graphics as well but i wouldn't have to play with open mouth because of those freaking details then.

and i can't play 3d games on the ps1 or n64 or even ps2/xbox anymore. it isn't much fun just because of the graphics.

i know many nintendo fans say it isn't so important but if they will play a metroid in 10 years on wii u's successor and have to play metroid or so on wii then with low res and worse graphics in general i bet they don't like it a lot anymore even if gameplay is still great

Games like Cryisis and alike have no artistic merit what so ever. there gameplay is non existent and graphics are all about trying to recreate a very bland and boring realistic look.

However, it undoubtedly adds to the experience. It's easier to see things. The little things impress you more. You become more immersed in the world.

A lot of people say this, but I think once you reach a certain point, when the games stop looking ugly, any more increases will start to have diminishing effects. Of course, it's hard to get into a PS2 game, those are too low. But I'd say a game like Demon's Souls is much more immersive than Uncharted. And Uncharted wouldn't be any less immersive if it had less graphics. Nor would Demon's Souls be any more immersive if it had better graphics. It's really all about the gameplay imo.

It's undoubtedly true that gameplay contributes to immersion more than anything else.

A close second, however, is atmosphere. A lot of atmosphere is visual design and soundtrack, but some small amount is contributed by technical graphics. Compare, for example, the atmosphere of Far Cry to that of Crysis. In my opinion at least, Crysis was far more immersive, even though they had pretty much identical visual aesthetics. Far Cry looked great for its time, but Crysis is beautiful. Having said that, the technical side of things was only worth anything because of the stellar visual design.

Lackluster design + great technology = mediocre result

Great design + great technology = great result.

Naturally, it's not the most important part of a game, and nobody will ever try to claim that it is.

However, it undoubtedly adds to the experience. It's easier to see things. The little things impress you more. You become more immersed in the world. It's nice to look at, and gaming is a visual experience. Visual design is more important, but good graphics with good visual design is better than bad graphics with good visual design.

I do feel that, now that I am used to slick HD graphics, going back several generations, to the PS1, is a painful experience. Some games can shine through their hideous technical graphics (like Crash); others, like Syphon Filter, fall flat because they are just so hideous (and unpolished and poorly designed, but the graphics contribute). However, go back one gen further to the SNES, and it's all fine again, because it's not trying to look like real life.

If you're going for a 3D, realistic look, you do need to spend a lot on making your game look good. If you make something cel-shaded, or intentionally pixelated, it can look great with far less emphasis on graphical technology.

*reads your 1st sentence* - you'd be very suprised.
