Forums - Gaming - Which generation was better? The 7th gen (PS3, Wii, 360) or the 6th gen. (PS2, GC, Xbox)

Answer the damn question!

7th gen 65 50.39%

6th gen 64 49.61%

Total:129

Which generation had the better combination of quantity and quality?

I personally think this generation is better than the last, but that's not because there was a lack of games last gen, it's just that this generation has catered to my tastes more. Some of my favorite games from last generation include:

Metal Gear Solid Series
Hitman Series
Shadow of the Collosus
Splinter Cell Series
Socom Series
God of War Series
Grand Theft Auto Series
Smash Bros.

Now compare that to this generation and I have a lot more favorite games:

Demon's Souls & Dark Souls
Valkyria Chronicles
Mass Effect Series
Red Dead Redemption
Fallout Series
Left 4 Dead Series
Bioshock Series
Gears Of War Series
Borderlands Series
Dead Space Series
Uncharted Series
Smash Bros.
Galaxy Series
Wii ___ Games (what? They're fun)
Batman Series
Portal Series
Ratchet & Clank Series (better than last gen imo)
Metal Gear Solid 4
God of War Series

And I'm sure I still missed out on some games. And not to mention the huge catalogue of downloadable games.

I think the inclusion of two more competitors has improved this gen's games a lot. Also, with this stronger hardware, the home consoles were able to handle formerly PC games.

Unless you're a huge fan of Japanese games, I think it's safe to say this generation was better.

as a Gamer from the launch day of Playstation (my dad brought one on release and i was 4/5) my order is:

Playstation 3
Playstation
Plasytation 2

i feel as if the PS3 had the games that i really wanted and was my gen to really be old enough to love. i don't think anything will top the epic franchises i played this gen!

but if i factor in the systems i had through the gens at 1 point or another:

PS3,360,Wii

PS2,Xbox,Cube

Ps1

its a different order.. although my 360 and Wii really didnt contrabute a whole lot of gaming this gen.

You say that now, but when top tier games from Naughty Dog and Quantic Dream come out on the ps4, you will wonder how you ever played ps3 games.

Comparable in my opinion, both brought great games and new features.

I'll say this gen though because 4 player co-op online is now "commonly" possible.

maybe.. but i love New Ips and thats the reason i have loved the PS3, The Ps4 will have to have more then just sequals to top it. (dont get me wrong.. i want Uncharted 4  & 5 next gen

Also, 6th gen. GCN > Wii imo and PS2> PS3. Only xbox's library improved imo.

My two favourite generations were the 4th and 5th. However, out of the two you specified, I feel this gen is ahead.

This gen, the DS, PSP and Wii have all surpassed my expectations and I have kept the quality of this generation very high. However, I feel let down by my PS3, don't get me wrong I've sunk well in excess of 100 hours into LBP and I don't regret my purchase at all, but the platform hasn't thrilled my in the same way that the DS, PSP and Wii have.

Anyway, my favourite 6th gen games:

Skies of Arcadia/Legends
Tales of Symphonia
Tales of the Abyss (however only played the 2011 3DS port)
Snake Eater
Metroid Fusion
Metroid Prime
Metroid Prime 2
SSBMelee
Paper Mario TTYD
Zelda Wind Waker
Zelda Twilight Princess
Zelda Minish Cap
Fire Emblem

And to contrast, my favourite 7th gen games:

Xenoblade Chronicles
SSBBrawl
Super Mario Galaxy
Super Mario Galaxy 2
The World Ends With You
Little Big Planet
Advance Wars: Dark Conflict
Pokemon Black/White
NSMBWii
Demon Souls
Zelda: Skyward Sword
Metroid Prime 3
Donkey Kong Country Returns
Mario Kart DS

This interests me. What were your favorite games from both consoles. You a fan of Japanese games? I assume EDIT: GC wasn't supposed to be there.

Yeah, if you're not a fan of Western games, then the PS3 will probably disappoint you. Quick question though: How the hell did you sink in 100 hours into LBP? Serious question, I've only found a handful of levels worth playing. Maybe I should search harder, or maybe it's only fun with friends?

From a Nintendo handheld POV, the DS was far greater than the GBA ever was.

GBA:
Pokemon Generation 3 - Outdone by HG/SS and Generation 5
Mario Ports - Matched by NSMB
SuperStar Saga - Matched by Bowser's Inside Story
3 Castlevanias - 3 Castlevanias
Metroid - Okay, one point to the GBA
FF Ports and spinoffs - Beaten by FF remakes and spinoffs plus Dragon Quest, and Chrono Trigger
Minish Cap
