So, you are saying that this is the best Sony could do with the ps3? Sony expected this? They didnt expect the console to sell more (it will sell, no matter what, this gen starts when we say so, people will get a 2nd job to buy it ´cause they apreciate the PS brand)all the "we're number one, gamers will upgrade to the ps3" and all the bullshit?

And NO, the current market leader is the wii o.O wtf

I said to myself when I was done posting, that you would respond with the real reason why you don't like Sony (it's same as almost all the other guys I've had arguments on this site with) and like clock work you delivered

hence the me feeling sorry for you part

and when did I ever say it wasn't?

Oh yeah I hate sony, thats why i kick my ps3 and my psp every single day, to remind how much hatred i have for such company xD

OH

ou can only judge a console based on what it could realistically and logically do, and under those circumstances the ps3 did amazing, it's a console that cost 600 dollars and is still here, currently leading the home console market, and received a ton of support, what more could you ask for?

Currently leading the home console market??? mmmm thats the wii mate, not ps3 :)

The folliowing phrases made me laugh:

  • The list of 'great new and huge franchises' contains MAG (Even the developer was closes after that!) Last Guardian (Not even released, timelines not met, key people leaving the developer) Warhawk/Starhawk (not well reviewed and pretty bad sales as well) Resistance (a franchise in decline since Resistance 1)
  • AC is as big as COD
  • Sony 'allowed' UbiSoft to go multiplat
  • Removing B/C so they can sell HD Remakes is a good thing.

Other than that, it still doesn't make any sense to me.

It is like "Okay Sony sucked in the first 2 years and tried to overhype their console and basically fucked their hardcore fanbase with a $600 price tag, but after they crashed, they did pretty well."

MAG - No they didn't. They went to a bigger project. Things went to shit after SOCOM for which was fudged up by poor reception and PSN taken down.

Warhawk - Warhawk was well recieved and an awesome well loved game. It had an active community years after launch.

MAG and Socom flopped. Period.

Starhawk is not doing well at all. Warhawk did okay, but is FAR from being a huge franchise. It is as huge as Kameo.

MAG did not flop.
Warhawk did great.

Live in that place in your head if you'd like.

Sony do also own more IP's than Nintendo, and Microsoft combined.

I don't believe that is accurate. But even if it were, it doesn't matter. Moving software is obviously more important.

Its looking like MS has moved more software than Sony this gen. Nintendo is the king when it comes to selling games pretty much every gen.

So Alan Wake, Kameo, Crackdown are huge franchises as well? I doubt it.

And if MAG did well, there would be a sequel and there won't be one. Warhawk did okay, nothing more. Starhawk as a sequel did not even crossed 100k in the US after two weeks. If this is your standard for successful and huge franchises it just shows how the Playstation brand went downhill with the PS3.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

1) I haven't said sqwat about Starhawk but you seem to really want to keep bringing that up. It's not doing good at all. Feel better now?

2) I haven't said that MAG and Warhawk are huge franchises. You seem to think that by disagreeing with you, i'm agreeing with Leo-J. I don't. To say "MAG flopped. Period." is bull.

3) Sequals for the sake of sequals are the only indicator for a game to be considered a success? It's an online only game that got good support after launch. There's your follow up. Warhawk's sales were fine, it had a great community. DLC did fine.

4) My main point was that your first post suggested that MAG put Zipper out of business. It didn't. SOCOM 4. It was once SONY's biggest online franchise. It survived Confrontation which everyone thought was horrible but the franchise's fans still made it the most played online game on PSN (CoD can suck it). When that went to shit is when Zipper got into big trouble. MAG did fine. I myself was an active part of the community for a really long time. I've seen a lot of those guys do some really amazing things in the game world when it comes to huge scale community activity over the course of days. If you wanna believe it was a flop, go ahead. I'm not addressing this anymore.

5) I'm done with this.

I think you have a good point Leo, that because Sony was falling behind they had to actively go out and look for lots of interesting original content. This benefited the PS3 owners in the long run, but not the early adopters in the short run.
The question is would Sony have lost so many exclusives if they had released at a much lower pricepoint in the west and they had become the market leader early in the system's lifecycle. Or would the 3rd parties have still decided to branch out there ip that were exclusive on the PS2 anyway due to the rise in HD developement costs?

This is a very interesting case study.

I find it fascinating that you find it interesting. OP has it twisted that his justification of such losses was nothing more than a desperation attempt to regain the recognition they once had; as is creating PS All-Star Battle Royale, and the pursuit of Binding of Isaac. Vita is also an indication that arrogance and pride are still a prevalent factor in running their business.

Maybe, but the Vita is a lot more reasonably priced than expected. We can only hope the OP is right that Sony has learned from their mistakes with the release of the PS4 or Orbits or whatever.

yeah, for the hardware that Vita packs, it's definitely priced reasonably. On a personal level, though, their main mistake for me is lack of solid games upon release, and their Memory Card being proprietary and expensive!

Let''s take a step back into the current console generation, and reminisce on the fact that SONY COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT gained a lot by loosing a lot..for example:

Sony probably realized when the ps3 began to fall into a very very fairly distant third place that being a cocky company isn''t always a good thing.... saying things like WE ARE THE MARKET LEADER(even though they were), and announcing that THE NEXT GENERATION DOESN''T START UNTIL WE SAY IT DOES, made them very cocky, then again at the time the playstation 2 did reach and surpass the 100 MILLION CONSOLE MILE STONE THAT ONLY 3 PURE VIDEO GAME SYSTEMS HAVE HIT, TWO OF WHICH ARE PLAYSTATION SYSTEMS, either way, sony did fall behind, and making claims that people would get a secound job to buy a playstation 3 for $600 us dollars, and over 1000 us dollars in other countries wasn't very wise.... hence they lost hundreds of millions on a ps3 that wasn't selling much software at the time to recoup the cost of the system, and a ps3 that was selling on par if not below GBA numbers while the DS was hitting it's prime..... in summary SONY LEARNED THAT LAUNCHING AT A HIGH PRICE AND EXPECTING THE WORLD TO BUY YOUR VIDEO GAME SYSTEM AUTOMATICALLY JUST BASED ON BRAND NAME, AND ALLOWING MICROSOFT TO NUT CHECK YOU WITH DIRTY ADVERTISING IS GOING TO GET YOU TO LOSE A LOT IF NOT ALMOST ALL THE MARKET SHARE YOU HAD IN THE GAMING INDUSTRY JUST 6-7 YEARS AGO....... and..... fall into 3rd place, looking like a loser cocky company that get''s what it get''s for being cocky.....

- because sony fell into 3rd place, sony gained a lot.... besides the fact they know being cocky, and launching at a high price was suicide, especially with two potential AAA ip for the first 6 months with resistance and motorstorm being the only games driving your console....

BECAUSE OF THIS GEN AND THEIR FAILURES SONY ALLOWED THE CREATION OF NEW EXCLUSIVE PLAYSTATION FRANCHISES

RESISTANCE

UNCHARTED

HEAVENLY SWORD(after microsoft said fuck you to ninja theory)

WARHAWK/STARHAWK

MAG

LAST GUARDIAN

JOURNEY

FLOWer

FLOW

PIXEL JUNK

and more....

because of competition and struggling for surivial sony created HUGE HUGE game franchises..... one being UNCHARTED, which has sold nearly 20 million copiues on all platforms to date... and will probably hit 25-30 million if they stop releasing UNCHARTED games all together, which is huge.....

Sony allowed Assassins Creed to become multiplatform, as well as GTA, this probably allowed the funding for AC II AC III and more AC games to be made... because of the game''s multiplatform success.... AC is now in line with COD as one of the top 5 biggest selling franchises of this console generation.....

SONY in order to keep competitive killed of PS2 backwards compatibility to cheapen he ps3 up quickly.... but in result, gained HD COLLECTIONS, remastered HIGH DEFINITION versions of PLAYSTATION 2 original  IP, like METAL GEAR SOLID 2/3, GOD OF WAR I and II, RESIDENT EVIL, SILENT HILL.... JAK AND DAXTER.... and more...... BECAUSE OF THE SUCCESS OF THE FIRST HD COLLECTION, GOD OF WAR HD COLLECTION, WHICH SOLD OVER 3 MILLION COPIES TO DATE.... 3RD PARTY COMPANIES HAVE TAKEN NOTE AND ARE RELEASING MORE HD COLLECTIONS ON BOTH PLAYSTATION 3 AND XBOX 360..... THIS IS INTRODUCING OLD PLAYSTATION 2 FRANCHISES, WITH TROPHIES/ACHIEVENEMNTS to new players.... in summary...... being competitive brought HD collections to this generation of consoles...... and sony are making smart ways of making money of ps2 games on psn..... without PS2 BC, people are having to buy PS2 games for 10 bucks.... meaning easy revenue for sony..... and everyone is happy since the games are made to work on ps3 almost perfectly... or should be...

what else can one add to this post? Share yout thoughts.... have sony become better through their failures with the playstation 3? Look at Vita...... getting huge ip on a constant basis right before E3 an after E3.... while psp had little ip to keep it going.... against the DS lite..

Allowed Assassins creed and GTA to be multi-plat?  You've got to be kidding yourself.  Go post unsupported garbage elsewhere.
