Any reason why the DS is practically dead in Japan with consumers moving to the fast growing 3DS, but not in US/Europe?

I mean I know the Japanese get the best deal with the 3DS at the moment but it is such a significant difference, 3DS is x35~40 the DS sales in JP but in the US it wasn't even x2 the DS sales.

What gives?

The DSi sells for the same price as the 3DS and the DSi LL (aka XL) sells for more than the 3DS. You can see the official Nintendo prices on the following pages. 3DS: 15,000 yen, DSi: 15,000 yen, DSi LL/XL: 18,000 yen.

Guys. Calm down. Vita will not die. I read on an internet forum that Sony can sell the Vita as a smartphone and it'll be saved!

I'm wondering how low the Vita can take before developers start dropping/delaying projects for the system? Honestly, if I was a Vita developer I would totally consider down porting Vita projects to other systems; as the Vita has little to no chance of a decent return on game development!!!

Poor Software Sales Abound in Japan Last Week
Just call it a post-Golden Week drought.

May 16, 2012

As always, Japanese firm Media Create has released its weekly sales data. This week's trove of information covers the week from May 7th through May 13th, and has been translated by Andriasang.

Golden Week is a time of rest and vacationing in Japan, which often means plenty of gaming for a portion of the country’s population. However, Golden Week occurred during last week’s sales cycle, leaving quite the drought in its wake. As a result, hardware and especially software sales are way, way down from their normal levels.

1.) Nintendo 3DS - 46,425
2.) PlayStation 3 - 12,996
3.) PlayStation Portable - 12,247
4.) PlayStation Vita - 6,340
5.) Nintendo Wii - 6,073
6.) Microsoft Xbox 360 - 1,023

Nintendo is once again the big winner in both hardware and software sales, though numbers are underwhelming across the board. Only one new game is on the list (Starhawk), and you’ll still find it littered with 3DS games in particular. But the selection of titles are older, mostly consisting of historic heavy-sellers or games that have been more recently released and are still burning slowly at retail.

Overall, the Nintendo 3DS accounted for a staggering 11 games on the top 20 list, with Wii grabbing two more. PlayStation Portable had four games chart while PlayStation 3 had three games. No PlayStation Vita games charted, though it's important to keep in mind that all Vita games are available digitally over the PSN. Media Create doesn't count those numbers.

1.) Mario Party 9 (Wii, 37,353 [334,821])
2.) Fire Emblem: Awakening (3DS, 16,530 [361,790])
3.) Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City (PS3, 14,553 [319,505])
4.) Starhawk (PS3, 12,873 [NEW])
5.) Super Mario 3D Land (3DS, 11,260 [1,574,788])
6.) Monster Hunter 3G (3DS, 9,105 [1,422,475])
7.) Mario Kart 7 (3DS, 9,045 [1,704,350])
8.) Kid Icarus Uprising (3DS, 7,636 [269,519])
9.) Mario and Sonic at the Olympics (3DS, 4,933 [162,270])
10.) Conception: Please Give Birth to My Child! (PSP, 4,600 [44,639])
11.) Wii Sports Resort (with Wiimote) (Wii, 4,416 [939,971])
12.) Pro Baseball Spirits 2012 (PSP, 4,041 [132,450])
13.) Wii Party (Wii, 3,408 [2,348,884])
14.) Pro Baseball Spirits 2012 (PS3, 3,342 [156,276])
15.) Dynasty Warriors VS (3DS, 3,231 [27,423])
16.) Kingdom Hearts 3D (3DS, 3,204 [311,688])
17.) Monster Hunter Portable 3rd (SE) (PSP, 3,104 [252,765])
18.) Harvest Moon: Hajimari no Daichi (3DS, 3,040 [182,188])
19.) 2nd Super Robot Wars Z Saisei Volume (PSP, 2,959 [331,392])
20.) Pokemon + Nobunaga’s Ambition (3DS, 2,819 [320,885])

PSP(2011 YTD)= 919,165
PSP+PSV(2012)=629,573(-31.5%)

Looking ahead to Week 20, PSP did 30,528 in 2011.

3DS+DS(2011 YTD)=1,419,926
3DS+DS(2012 YTD)=1,711,158(+20.5%)

Looking ahead to week 20, 3DS+DS did 27,512 in 2011.

All handhelds(2011 YTD)=2,339,091
All handhelds(2012 YTD)=2,340,731

It's amazing this last number. The market is exactly the same, Nintendo just stole Sony's slice.

It is true in America as well. Ipads, pods, and phones and any other type of tablet such as kindle, galaxy and Nook are pushing through. Kids these days could give a crap about Mario. They did not grow up with him. All they know is that they cannot afford a 40 dollar mario game. What they can afford and do more with are free apps, facetime, free phone time and texting with the pod, free, free, free. Kids want that, because then they do not have to think about going out and buying games or having their parents do it for them. Now even if they want something that cost money the lazy parent just says do not spend over 20 bucks today and leaves the credit card.

Future generations of consoles will only get worse unless something is done.

Ryan... a lot of kids still love Mario and still grow up with him. Even the Preppy people I hand around sometimes know what Mario is! One girl loves Mario Kart. She also played SSBB before and she adores her Wii. I never thought I would witness her say she like Mario. Another is in love with Pokemon... yet never talks about it because it would ruin her "image." I'm sorry, but you are wrong. (In a sense.)

lol when everythings doomed ninty is still alive

Who buy  a ds never has a problem to paying 40 dollars for a game i don't know why they will switch into smartphones.

Smartphone game could never be better than a handheld game because if the quality increase the budget increase so the price of game will be more expensive than 1 dollars and smartphone gamer won't buy this games.

PS4 - over 100 millions let's say 120m
Xbox One - 70m
Wii U - 25m

Vita - 15m if it will not get Final Fantasy Kingdoms Heart and Monster Hunter 20m otherwise
3DS - 80m
