I don't mean to be a prick, but this is a VG sales site, use the numbers.

I have to admit that I'm kinda confused over this... I know the DS outsold PSP by... what, almost 9 to 1? something like that - but these pics above seems to show something else entirely. What am I missing??

When the DS started getting games like Brain Age it's sales skyrocketed to the moon and beyond.

oh... I thought it might have been something like that :P

Yeah it's hard to tell. ;p

NSMB 2 might do the same this hoilday season to the 3DS.

I hope it does! I mean, the 3ds is doing great right now - but it's gonna need long legs! And that means great SW!

He's right, but one year ago the Nintendo product was in the exact same position.

Yuuup. But Ninty quickly rectified that situation by lowering the barrier to entry and increasing its value with high quality software.

Sony doesn't have the ability to lower the barrier of entry as they are not currently profitable. Sony doesn't have the first party software to really distinguish itself from 3DS and the multitude of other mobile entertainment devices.

Sony's biggest issue with all of their portable gaming is the lack of real portable games that are not clones or ports of home consoles. It needs something to distinguish itself beyond portability. It needs its Pokemon.... great with what I've seen in motion sports, kart racing, and brawling... I guess I now know what the next inspired game will be.

Agreed. Though I also feel the same way about the 3DS. It's not a very strong product yet in my eyes. It doesn't have that game that is calling to me yet.

I think it'll be interesting to see how this situation looks like in a year or two! Perhaps Sony will wow us all at E3?!

ahhhh, I wanted a Jack Treton-like troll response. Nintendo, you disappoint me again.

Sony is marketing Vita as a portable PS3 and while it sure will excite some die-hard hardcore gamers that want to have an almost complete experience everywhere, for many people the sense of a portable game being as priceful as a home console game -

I'm not so sure about that. The PSP sold games at 20$ last time I checked, and I don't see Vita games staying pricy (if they are, I haven't checked) for too long. In general, Sony has been pricing their portable offerings less than their home console offerings, it's just the nature of the business. So I don't think that's entirely true. Plus, the Vita is priced 250$ atm, the PS3 was 600$ on launch. Big difference there really.

considering that a portable can never provide a full gaming experience a home console can - simply doesn´t work.

I can't agree with this either. When the GBA came out, I remember playing F-Zero Maximum Velocity to completeness. It was a tad lower quality than the SNES versions in some ways, but in many ways it beat the home console experience. Sure we're talking 1 home console late, but it's a home console experience none-the-less.

In the case of the Vita, it is beyond the 3DS, so beyond Wii-like graphics, but a tad inferior to the PS3. All in all though, it can definitely offer a home-console like experience I really can't agree with you here.

In what way does it not offer a home-console experience other than screen size and controller comfort?

Also, did you know you could play PS3 on your Vita? Remote controlled?

You see, it´s a different thing when we take a look at the 3DS: of course the cheaper device and games are attractive for the audience, but in therms of product characteristics, the 3Ds is not meant to be a"portable-home-console", it is designed to be simply a portable game with most of the possible features that can enhace or complement the experience of playing in a portable console, rather than mimic a home console. The aim is to be a product with its own personality and this combined with an affordable price and a good software line-up make the 3DS more atractive for consumers.

That's another take on the business. It works too. One might work, one might not, but you can't say the Vita can't offer a home console experience, it can. Whether it does or not, and whether that is frugal or not is a whole other question.

I'm not sure if this is related, but also the Vita offers unique HW interfaces not available on the PS3 traditionally. A back touch screen, a front touch screen, a camera and other features the Sony fans can probably better describe. All in all the HW does differentiate if that makes any sense.

I still think that Vita will have better sales as soon as better software comes. A price drop (which in my opinion is unlikely to happen in short therms) would also help, but the sense of value aggregate to the product personality must be taken into consideration. Maybe Sony should try a different marketing approach, treating Vita like an original product/experience instead of trying to compare it with a PS3

The price for the Vita is already affordable, but still not enough for me for example to buy it. At 170$ I would start thinking about it. Sometimes, it's more about consumer perception than about the actual worth of the unit. So I kind of agree with you here.

wow logic sinks to new illogical levels...  btw those charts have been updated after adjustments.... looks even worse now.

To be fair, I see what he means, that the 3DS was in a similar position. Yet still for some reason its sales were much stronger even prior to the price drop.

So somehow the 3DS was still more compelling than the Vita H1 of year 1. Was it the e-shop, was it the 3D? Was it the fact that customers knew good games were coming? Street Fighter IV maybe? idk honestly.

How come both Vita and 3DS is struggling in the west? 3DS is doing fairly well I guess, but it really should be doing a whole lot better... Is it that missing 2nd analog circle/stick? ;P

Cheap Smartphone games should be the main reason. It wasn't nearly as widespread during the DS/PSP generation as it is now.
