Forums - Nintendo - Uncertain: Convenient time required for Wii U retail downloads (10GB+)

I have to wait for 10GB+ downloads to finish on my WiiU

That is ridiculous. How hard can it be? 17 15.89%

No biggie, I'll just DL ... 56 52.34%

I won't DL games, so I don't care. 33 30.84%

Total:106

This actually is not a big deal to me at all. The Wii U pad is not the Ipad. It's not like I'm using it for a bunch of other important things so I can easily find time to download a new title. And I get only about 6-8 new games (not used or black market) per console so this means nothing.

That being said, maybe I'll be getting more titles this generation if there are more medium size games (between a AAA title and an Ipad game). And maybe (probably not) the DL games will be 5 bucks cheaper than the retail version

What about game demoes?

The issue already exists for the 3DS, they take long to DL and they hog the system, no room to do anything else on the 3DS while waiting.

Only just got a 3ds and haven't tested out game demoes yet.  In either case, although unfortunate, this is still the least of my worries with the new system.  I wouldn't want them spending extra money on whatever (processing power I guess?) to make it multi-task to that extent.

Guys, the quote says:

"However, consumers will be able to use the Wii U effectively by finding convenient times to download software such as when they are sleeping at night."

How could that mean anything else than the Wii U doesn't multitask for downloads and make them background operations? Why mention they can do it at night if it could be done seemlessly in the background? Nah, I stick to my conclusion in the OP.

happy -- isn't not that your aren't right, it's that your aren't 100% certainly right.  this was at the investor's meeting  so this would have been originally in japonese right?  so mistranslation could be at play here too.  the quote is just too vague to come to any conclusion imo.

Okay, it's the second time someone brings up the Japanese translation argument when other explanations lack, so let's go the extra mile.

Here is the quote in japanese, people who know how to read it, you're welcome to verify if the meaning was maintained in the translation:

There's more, but I think that's where the "sleeping at night" part ends.

cool stuff -- i can't read japonese so i'll defer that to someone more capable.  cone has a good point though, if the 3DS can do background downloads it would seem silly for the wiiU not to be able to.

I think you're wrong. I think Nintendo are trying to hint that you CAN do it in the background, but it may slow the games down, or may not be able to use the controller etc.

You can download in the background on the 3DS. So the WiiU is only logical to follow.

You can? I had no idea...

Is this new from a recent update? I haven't played my 3DS in 3 weeks now.

My last experience with downloads was waiting after the MGS demo to DL and it took a while.

It's an update which arrived in March I believe. When you go to download something, you'll receive a message asking if you wish to do a sleep download. Click yes, and it'll download later, either when it's on the home screen, or connected to the Internet, or simply in sleep mode. Then, when you turn it back on to play, the download will stop, and will restart when you finish with it again. You can stack up to 10 downloads, and they download much quicker (2-3X) than normal.

They won't go back. I think you're reading too much into this. So just wait for E3 or for an ACTUAL announcement

It's a question of maturity of online services. To not offer these basic features makes them look like a small business, which they aren't.

How expensive can it be to add this fundamental e-commerce functionality?

Also, this new e-commerce and digital download of retail games is a big part of their new plan, if the investor's briefing is any indicator of such (1 page of 5 was dedicated to it). The least you can ask for is a job well done.

Anyways, let's see what cone says, maybe we'll see this as an incremental upgrade

Fair enough!

It would be best if it could run in the background during other processes, but now I'm just asking for the normal solution. Even if the 3DS solution is clumsy, at least it's a step forward. I don't like it, but it's much more than what OP led me to believe.

Case closed guys. Thanks for participating.

That's cool. I'm the VGChartz detective.

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

well after reading the sentence and about the 3ds comment in relation to download in sleep mode.

perhaps it just simply means that the consumer can use the wii u in an efficient manner when not playing, as in not being fully booted into OS wasting power aka download games in sleep mode.

I still enjoy having physical copies of the stuff I own, the only downloaded games I have are the ones Sony gave away and the Walking Dead. Can't impress people with your harddrive.

I downloaded the ~7GB of Diablo 3 in around 2 Minutes

European Internet rules - So i could wait those 5 Minutes for a download on the WiiU
Hell give me 50GB games - Dont care at all

I just thought it meant it will take a whole night to download a wii u game. Unless it is sjovelware. Did it actually say anything about not being able to play while downloading? Does it matter? Do it while you sleep or go buy the game like the old timer gamers did in the old days on the wii.

The point isn't to ask the customer to adapt to a poor solution (which we've understood thankfully it isn't). The point is to, as a large business, to offer convenience to customers.

In todays day and age of software, such basic solutions are expected from an online solutions provider (in this case Nintendo). To deliver any less is not a good sign of their industry awareness, of how others do things.

That's the point. That some fans justify it is also a bad sign as to their judgement on the matter.

Of course it's not the end of the world, that is not the point. The point is to say, Nintendo, wake the hell up! Get your head out of the sand.
