Guys, the quote says:

"However, consumers will be able to use the Wii U effectively by finding convenient times to download software such as when they are sleeping at night."

How could that mean anything else than the Wii U doesn't multitask for downloads and make them background operations? Why mention they can do it at night if it could be done seemlessly in the background? Nah, I stick to my conclusion in the OP.

happy -- isn't not that your aren't right, it's that your aren't 100% certainly right.  this was at the investor's meeting  so this would have been originally in japonese right?  so mistranslation could be at play here too.  the quote is just too vague to come to any conclusion imo.

Okay, it's the second time someone brings up the Japanese translation argument when other explanations lack, so let's go the extra mile.

Here is the quote in japanese, people who know how to read it, you're welcome to verify if the meaning was maintained in the translation:

There's more, but I think that's where the "sleeping at night" part ends.

cool stuff -- i can't read japonese so i'll defer that to someone more capable.  cone has a good point though, if the 3DS can do background downloads it would seem silly for the wiiU not to be able to.
