Forums - Nintendo - Iwata can’t promise “overwhelmingly rich” Wii U launch titles, proposals for evergreen titles

Honestly, I could be completely wrong but I suspect Nintendo is really trying to lower expectations in order to maximize the positive reception of what they do announce ...

In a way it wouldn't be that much different from parents of teenagers telling their children before Christmas that they shouldn't expect remarkably expensive gifts (like iPads) just because their friends are getting them; because you can then give them something like a 3DS or an iPod and they will be far more likely to be happy with it.

This could be quite true. However, I think hype for an amazing launch would be a better plan.

E3 will do that for us.

Underwhelmingly poor launch confirmed.

I hate to say this. But Nintendo always under sells themselves. If they expect to lose money they tell investors a worse prediction. Nintendo should have at least ten internally developed games and multiple second and third party games to publish. Nintendo should have a massive line up.

I'd expect Nintendo to have a large lineup. Iwata is simply managing peoples expectations. My bet is he is referring to titles like 2D Mario and Zelda which won't likely launch within the launch window. My bet is even if Nintendo has Mario ready or Zelda releasing them strategically rather then at launch is Nintendo's smartest approach. So Iwata is just making sure customers like Rol don't freak because their 2D Mario title isn't launched.

The launch window looks like it could be

Probable/Confirmed:

New Super Mario Bros. Mii
Pikmin 3
Call of Duty: Black Ops 2
Assassin's Creed 3
Aliens: Colonial Marines
Rayman Legends
Dragon Quest X (Japan first?)
Batman: Arkham City GOTY/Wii U Edition
007 Legends
Madden NFL/NBA 2K/etc.

At least. Shouldn't be too bad. I would count on at least 1-2 more Nintendo releases and a few more Japanese titles as well.

Honestly it might be better if Nintendo doesn't entirely blow their load on the immediate launch. NSMB + Call of Duty + Assassin's Creed are three monster franchises and then you have Pikmin as well for the Nintendo fans on top of that.

If you're Nintendo maybe throw in one more game ala Wave Race or something and you got yourself a pretty solid launch window. If you have too many big titles, software sales are going to start to cannibalize each other.

@Joel. 2D Mario is almost confirmed for launch, all we need is a spokeperson to say it. But for all we know, the game was running last year. All that was needed were some levels and maybe some power-ups. The engine and WiiU to padlet functionality was all there.

I wonder if there will be a killer-app at launch, like a Mario 64 or a Rogue Leader. Something for experienced gamers.
Pikmin 3 could be this, but I don't think it has a following big enough to be considered 'killer'.

Until you've played it, every game is a system seller!
