Forums - General - 4-year old boy kills father "over Playstation"

@D21. A gun is meant to kill. Your analogy would work if it was "Guns are out of clips and pistol-whip people"

Yes.  That's what a gun is for.  Just like a sword, battle axe, knife, bow and arrow, etc.  That's why I own one.  So that I can kill somebody if it ever comes down to it.  A gun is a tool and its purpose is killing.

Now, does having a gun make me a killer?  Of course not.  Has my gun killed anybody?  Not yet.  Keep in mind, I'm not a gun fanatic.  Prior to being a cop, I didn't own one.  In fact, the gun I own was issued to me by my department.  But, suppose I did kill somebody.  Would the jury blame me or would they blame my gun?  The intention to kill was mine.  The gun was the tool that I used to carry out my intention.

There's a message in all of this:

Nothing good can come from buying a playstation!!

I believe it's suggesting the opposite. Go and play on your iPad.

He was 4 years old and wanted a PlayStation... what is wrong with our world?!?!?! Even the Hardcore Sony Fans started off on Nintendo. Just goes to show that Nintendo is necessary to a persons life.

if the dad brought a wii instead, the whole block would be dead :P

the thing is just, that guns make it so incredibly easy to kill somebody that we don't doubt for a second that a 4 and 1/2 year old could do it

Agree with others as this has nothing to do with gun control and everything to do with parenting.

1) If you are a gun owner, your children must be taught about guns and gun safety.
2) If you are a gun owner, you should NEVER simply lay your gun down on a table where others can grab it.

So sad.. and now this kid will be devastated his whole life.

sure but this would still not happen with a gun law like "you can't have a gun at home", if he wouldn't have one illegally then.

it's like people could drive as fast as they want in a city and if they have an accident "it's not a law issue, the driver should know that he can't drive so fast in a city"

but maybe it was the mother? telling the son "you have to say the police what i say you now" damn no clue but it's hard to belive that a kid like this takes the pistol and kills his father because he didn't get a playstation. I'm pretty sure the kid didn't understand that he won't see his father anymore for the rest of his life but it's crazy that he knew how to use the weapon when angry...

I wholeheartedly disagree with the mindset. Violence creates fear creates, fear leads to accidents. But alas we both digress.

I was just discrediting the metaphore you used. You should realize it was kind of off.

Hence the reason why most people don't leave guns, hand grenades, bleach, knives, small toys, etc. where a child can reach them.  Kids don't know any better.  The gun did exactly what it was supposed to do.  It killed.  No malfunctions or anything.  The father didn't do what he should have done--keep his death tool out of the reach of a four year old.

If you give it some thought, thevfatyer was actually commiting child abuse.

Which reminds me of the time I arrested a kid's parents for giving their child a gun.  Kid was probably 10 years old or something.  Had his own gun and shot himself in the foot.

More kids drown each year in their own pools than kids that shoot people. Should we also make it illegal to not have personal pools?

No, we teach kids how to swim.

Every human has the right to protect themselves and their property. That is the purpose of a gun at home. Nations where you can't own a gun do not make the citizens safer. It just makes them more vulnerable to government.
