^The question was, should I want it. I needed to discuss it with you guys, I was hoping that was okay.
Am I the only one in this dilemma, not sure if they want to buy certain Nintendo games anymore, not certain if I want my hopes strung up anymore?
Or am I the only one? Is this a boring topic?
Nintendo needs to expand the mushroom kingdom, and have high production values for their high selling games.
The way NSMB2 looks sends me the message that they don't care about 2D Mario.
I LOVE ICELAND!

If I were you, I would hold off until after it is released before deciding to buy it or not. See what reviewer and other users say about it. Preferably look for the reviewers that have a similar taste for 2D platformers as you.
I really hate the word "depth" or "soul" on videogames, kind of a buzzword since it too dam subjective.
But in my opinion what you are describing is more the presentation itself of the game, the visual style. In games, gameplay ande level design is what gives the depth to games in my opinion. A game like mario is rather simple, run to the left and jump, but there a whole tought behind this concept, which way to take (up down) wich item to keep, wich world to choose, where secrets might be,where to attack and when to dodge. A whole mix of toughts and sensations that change constantly behind the simple idea of run to the left. This is, in my opinion, the depth of mario. But i understand people might figure depth as a more artsy thing.
About the chessynes, cant say it hasnt been there since the beggining. The idea itself of a plumber rescuing a princess form a turtle dragon is already cheesy.

New Super Mario and Paper Mario (to a degree): Retro graphics Mario Party, Mario Golf, Mario Tennis and Mario Kart: Standard graphics |
@bold. Yeah! I know (good point). But does Retro graphics need to = cheesy graphics??? :( D21, put yourself in my shoes. I don't know by now if you know how much I love Super Metroid and the original Punch Out!! Now, what if those games, retro as they are, were to get proper revivals (not Other M, not Punch Out!! Wii), I mean games that don't feel rushed, with good music, that feel just complete. What would their graphics look like??
And since those are 2D games, why not put the effort in? If they could do it 25 years ago with an 8-man team, why can't they do it today with 20-men teams, large budgets and great software tools. It's just all beyond me, ... unless what Lord C. says is true.
@WiiBox3, thanks WiiBox3, that's probably what I'm gonna do! I already semi-regret my 3D-Land purchase, it was so-so.
This is one of the most sad topics I've ever seen here. It's just looping and looping, and the "proofs" used are getting more and more ridiculous (and to get more ridiculous than "the trees look the same" is a hard thing to do.
And for the record, this is what we got for Mario 3D land when it was announced

Four screens that showed nothing of the genius of that game - absolutely nothing!
And now we have something a lttle more especial and full of little hints (raccoon mario, maybe 3D backgrounds, gold mario and enemies, shyniness, posible Super Mario 3 revival, I bet on sppining jump return also as it's also in the super mario mii demo). Those are the things that should be discussed - what Nintendo could do to make the game fun, not the grass not the trees!
There's a big difference between quirkiness and cheesiness. I'll leave you the task of looking into them and thinking about them.
The smiles on the clouds, the rescuing the princess, the magic mushrooms, those are all quirky and stem from a more Oriental culture (mushrooms, right?). But what we have here is another thing altogether, and much too strongly brings to mind the idea of a quick buck, as pezus so well described.
I feel the exact same way as you, so you're definitely not alone. I find the art style and graphics extremely boring, bland, and childish.
Nintendo games used to blend the artistic line between fun/kiddy/mature very well, but nowadays they don't. I think part of the problem is that higher console power allows you to express your game and characters in more detail and also leaves less to the user's imagination. By leaving less to the imagination and pushing a certain style on people, you alienate a good portion of them.

@vic. At least that looked awesome. The end result wasn't as amazing...
Here, it looks bad, so it could be even worse... Then again as I said it could surprise us, so all the power to Nintendo, but even then they should do a better job catering to all markets rather than just the kiddy market.
Think Disney. If they can do it (like for instance Epic Mickey), then so can Nintendo. The worst part is, they already have... many times. Hopefully that was not from a time that has already dawned.
And that's what I want to know.
