They all have their different pros and cons, I personally went with LCD because there were no 32" plasmas and I didn't think the premium for an LED TV was worth it.
There is little difference between an LED and LCD TV, LED TV's use a different type of backlighting which allows the TV to be a lot thinner, more energy efficient and they generally produce deeper blacks. Plasmas are very different. They're usually only available in 42" and upwards, they are very heavy, they consume a lot of power and they're generally less reliable. But in exchange for this, they usually have a faster response time, better picture quality and deeper blacks than both LED and LCD TV's. Plasmas aren't as bright as LED and LCD TV's and have a reflective glass screen, so having a plasma in a well lit room isn't a good idea, plasmas are far better in darker rooms though as they have the deepest black level, while an LCD TV may appear washed out.
Basically, it all depends on what you're looking for and how much. LCD TV's are the best for general use and for smaller screens, plasmas are the best for home cinemas, and LED's are great all around, but you'll have to pay a premium.

My Panasonic Plasma went out after 14 months, I went with a Sony Bravia 55 inch LCD has been great for gaming so far, no lag. Needed a bigger screen but if a 42 inch is big enough for the room your putting it in I would go with LED. Picture quality did look better but the price jump in the 50 inch and up size range priced me out of the LED market. Also I wanted a reliable TV most of all LCD is to me the most reliable option. LED is relatively new tech.

Backlit LED LCDs are better than Edge-lit. It's up for debate because despite the huge advancements in quality that LED backlighting provides over traditional LCD displays, plasmas are still widely regarded among the experts as having better picture quality. OP: Check out this link and do your own research on this site; these guys know their shit and have done extensive testing on these TVs with a variety of content and in multiple lighting conditions. http://www.hometheater.com/content/do-you-prefer-plasma-or-lcd-tvs One test I read about in particular a while back was a movie with a space scene. Watching it on an LED backlit LCD offered good black levels, but when lighting bright images in dark scenes, such as stars in space for example, it resulted in an odd halo effect around the stars that's not present in the same scene on a plasma, where it looked flawless... and many stars were hardly even visible on the LED, whereas the plasma had everything visible in better detail. Bottom line: Go with whatever suits you best. It's true that plasmas heat up a smaller room fast (which sucks), but for the best picture quality, be it movies or games, they're the better choice. Picking among the top models of either tech, though, will result in a great TV. |
so do you think i should go for this TV? Or a cheaper Plasma alternative ?
I have all three. Personally I like plasma better, for a few reasons. 1 price I got a Samsung 50" 3d tv 1-2 yrs ago for 1200$. It was a slim design @1.2 inch thick and light around 50 pounds with stand. 3d image is pretty good to. My Samsung 40inch LCD would be my second choice. With led dead last by far. The led color was terrible, ghosting was aweful, and of you plan to use a pc forget the led it looks even worse. The led hyper white lights have a blue tint in them( all led are this way some are closer to true white than others ). These hyper white LEDs are what cause the wash out. I also have a 60" sharp Quattron tv it's ok however none can stand close to my plasma. Also I made almost zero alterations to my settings minus brightness/contrast.
So the downside to my plasma it consumes over 300 watts compared to 120 for my LCD and well under 100 for the led ( these figures are different depending on size). With higher power consumption comes hotter temps. The plasma in my office/w door closed would raise the room temp a good 2-3 degrees. plus playing pc games sitting real close you would feel the heat. Well there is my thoughts on the subject but it will come down to you.

For 2012 the Samsumg (PLASMA) is better than Samsung (LED) or Panasonic (PLASMA). http://reviews.cnet.com/best-high-definition-tvs/?tag=leftnav |
Are you sure these are 2012 models? Arent they 2011 models reviewed?
Anyway, the Samsung Plasma, what are the downsides in gaming? Does it support 1080p in 3D?

These are the lastest models from Samsumg, Panasonic and others released in the late 2011... the new HDTV from they are planned to be released in late 2012.
About that Samsumg Plasma... I can't find any dowside for games... there are some problem with black-level performance in shadown details in 1080p/24 but I saw that just in Blu-ray movies (well... most game are 720p)... the Smart Hub interface is confusing and so slow.
I have no game or movie in 1080p 3D do make tests.

I want a Samsung plasma so bad. I love the Samsung 8000 LED series but I heard it's got much problems with bleeding/clouding and that CNET reviews seems to confirm that.
To the Samsung plasma. In the review it's called Samsung PN59D8000. But what is the same model called in my country Sweden?
Here in my country I see a Samsung PS64D8005 (2011 model) and Samsung PS64E8005 (2012 model) - are these the same as in the review?

I don't know.
Here (Brazil) I found three models: PL51D8000, PL59D8000 and PL64D8000... I found in Samsumg's support the PL59D8000 is the same PN59D8000 with Latin American firmware... I guess your PS is for Sweden firmware.
That 8005 model doesn't exists in US yet (so no Latin American version too).
I'd invest in an LED. Go with Sharp or Samsung.
