My Panasonic Plasma went out after 14 months, I went with a Sony Bravia 55 inch LCD has been great for gaming so far, no lag. Needed a bigger screen but if a 42 inch is big enough for the room your putting it in I would go with LED. Picture quality did look better but the price jump in the 50 inch and up size range priced me out of the LED market. Also I wanted a reliable TV most of all LCD is to me the most reliable option. LED is relatively new tech.
