Forums - Nintendo - Do you want Nintendo to release alternative payment games?

Should Nintendo diversify its payment models?

Today the games industry is changing yet again. The games industry is moving to more profitable and cheaper development model. Should Nintendo try a F2P model with any games launching the basic game free and charging for additional content like weapons, levels, characters etc...etc... Should Nintendo launch any subscription based games either MMO's or even offline games which get new content daily and a monthly fee t keep it getting additional content? Should Nintendo continue to work towards a heavier DLC model as they have begun to adapt? Maybe Nintendo should start releasing some episodic games releasing four level portions of a game and online multi player with it?

Should Nintendo adapt and follow its competitors in changing up its payment types for some games. This enabling Nintendo to compete closer with the competitors on both consoles and PC. Or should Nintendo avoid following competitors and maintain the current pay model that they have maintained for years.

Around the Network

I think a lot of people like Nintendo because they are simple. Most of their games are really easy to pick up and understand, but still fun as hell. What 10 yr old kid is going to understand or care enough to get bonus material?

If Nintendo added DLC or bonus content, or whatever, it should be limited to their hardcore games, and even then, only things the fans request. Don't add story missions, but maybe make events for Smash Bros for bonus characters, and charge people who missed the event if they want the character.

As for collector editions, NOE does it, look at The Last Story. I think CE's should exist, but only for the truely hardcore titles which don't have high volume.

As a consumer I say hell no. I don't want F2P I don't want subscriptions and I definitely don't want episodic content. I wouldn't mind DLC in moderation though I would prefer Nintendo's old policy that DLC would be free and updated automatically. When Nintendo announced WiiConnect24 I was so optimistic and hopeful for consistent new content released freely and downloaded to your console. Nintendo did this with Pokemon and Animal Crossing but missed a crap load of opportunities to really take advantage of it.

However from a profit point of view. All three models could boost profits especially if Nintendo could get more users online. If Nintendo released one Episodic first party game, on F2P game and one subscription game like LoZ:MMO. it could really get Nintendo a ton of extra online business and potentially make a good profit. The problem would be the consumers aren't largely in support of any of those three methods.

I think DLC is the only thing Nintendo should begin to implement but if possible it should be free like Pokemon/AnimalCrossing. Paid DLC should be a last resort and Nintendo needs to provide a very good value worth in content to charge.

I hate games like that. I hope the major consoles never take that route

Nintendo's model still works. Mario Kart and Mario 3D Land are still selling 100k a month six months after launch. I don't see any reason to change it. As long as they launch hardware at a price that isn't too steep, they'll continue to be fine. I don't care for free-to-play or episodic releases. I want to buy a game for $40 or $60 and then be able to enjoy it to the fullest. If DLC comes out later than enhances the game, like for the new Fire Emblem, that's fine. But that's irrelevant because it's purely optional.
