Forums - Gaming - Capcom defends on-disc DLC

at least they're being honest >_<. DLC was always going to go this route, and the only way to change it is to not buy it. Expansion packs, required that original be good enough to warrent an expansion. Since DLC is cheap, it's an easier impulse buy.

DLC is here to stay, in both okay forms and this form, as these companies would have already quit if it wasn't profitable imo.

I sort of agree with capcom, anyone that plans dlc is essentially doing the same thing. If the DLC is planned, the game could have been delayed to fit it in. There's also no knowing how much of the DLC was done before it goes gold. Some other companies probably do delay the release of the DLC a week or 2 to make it appear that they finished it after it was released.

However, it's still shady business imo.

Capcom is still great, people :)

Just wait one year before buying their fighting games. Problem solved.

I don't know how on disc "DLC" can be defended. Other shady things I can at least relate to and see where they're coming from. With this, I can't.

Online Pass? It's free and it helps developers get money from used game sales. You want to play on their servers? Buy new or pay a fee. I'm okay with that.

Paying for cheat codes? You want to "break" a game that they spent time tweaking and developing? A small fee.

Day one DLC? Maybe it couldn't fit on the disc. Maybe it was intended to be on the disc but it wasn't ready in time. As long as the game is complete, it's okay.

Late DLC? I love it. You get more story, new levels, new powers, or whatever. You completed the game and you were satisfied. You want a little bit more, it's here. If not, it's no big deal. You finished the main experience.

On Disc DLC? This is some bullshit. They finished the content on time. They were able to fit it onto the disc. You purposely withhold it from the player and sell it to them as if it were some add-on bonus.

Like I said in another thread, if Capcom just came out and charged $80 for Street Fighter x Tekken, Super Street Fighter 4, or Marvel vs. Capcom 3, I could respect them a little bit more. It's the fact that they insult our intelligence that offends me. This content is on the disc I purchased but I can't take it to my friends' house? I can't use it if I don't have the internet, even if I payed for it? That's bull! And they've (not just Capcom) gone from charging for superficial stuff like costumes to key parts of the game. Game modes, characters, powers?

I don't like what my hobby has become.

I will not ever purchase a brand new game from EA, Capcom and Namco ever again. I will get games I want from these company used from now on.

What did Namco Bandai do to you?

Fotunately Capcom has not many games I really care about, in fact there is only DMC and I guess there won´t be any DLC for that one, so screw you Crapcom. But we got to admit the misstake is within the customer, if people stop buying it then they will rethink their strategy, otherwise they´re just going to do same thing over over again.

I can't do anything because i have no interest in the game, but a class suit for all people who purchased the game would make sense here.

Not at all. From what i understand, there is precedent in consumer law stating that you own all of the content on the software you buy for your own personal use (backup copies of software are always legal, no matter what your user agreement says, it's just illegal for you to distribute said backup copies). If the distributor of the content is withholding some of that content from you in bad faith (e.g. in a clear attempt to milk you for money), then you could easily set up the idea that this is in violation at least of American consumer law, and then move into Class-action suit territory.

Even if there is no actual basis in consumer law, what i just said at least sounds like it makes sense, a lawyer would likely take the case and consumers could, even seeing the suit dismissed, scare the living hell out of Capcom and perhaps prod them in the right direction.

I really want Dragon's Dogma but sadly, I really hate capcom's dlc practices and may have to skip as a result. The only power we have as consumers are our wallets.

Dlc should be created to expand the life of a game after launch not released at launch to get even more than $60 from consumers. I don't mind pre-order bonuses (as long as they're the same across retailers) or online passes (bought all my games new this gen) but this terrible dlc practice has to stop.

DLC in general also needs fairer prices. For example, FFXIII-2 cost $60 at launch with a ton of special battles and monsters included in that $60 but to get omega, one has to pay $3.99? Terrible. Even S-E has joined the ranks now. FFXIII, for all the hate, was a complete game. With FFXIII-2, the nickel and diming begins

"Dr. Tenma, according to you, lives are equal. That's why I live today. But you must have realised it by now...the only thing people are equal in is death"---Johann Liebert (MONSTER)

"WAR is a racket. It always has been.

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives"---Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler

Yeah they value their customers alright.

Day one DLC, on or off the disc (Hell, that new crappy RE squad spin off had DLC before the game was even out!).

Canceled Mega Man games that the fans DESIRED.

Released a "newer" version of MVC3 not even a year after release.

SF4 had two upgrades, and while I was ok with SSF4 to SSF4:AE, I still wasted my money on the collectors SF4.

Don't forget the versus mode in RE4 that was pretty much done then was offered as DLC.

Capcom doesn't get my money anymore the last year or so as I now buy all their games used. I will probably even buy Revelations used despite how great it is.

It's just that simple.

I really want Dragon's Dogma as it simply looks brilliant but Capcom just keep on making it harder and harder for people to trust them enough to buy their games by pulling this crap over and over... It was a certain pre-order at one point but now it could be that I dont get it at all, because I refuse to buy 2nd hand cast-offs.
