Forums - Gaming - Have you ever wanted to make a game?

I created a couple of games in the past. Currently I'm learning Action Script 3 to make some flash games, nothing out of the ordinary though; the games were simple recreation of old classics (Tic tac toe, a platformer, Arkanoid with some twist and so on)
Currently I'm working with a group of friends to make a game of Dog Races, you can bet and raise your dog, level up stats, breed, make hybrids and a couple of things more xD Sounds silly, but so far the game is cool, at least for me.

My recommendation: start studying some programming laguage and then start making rip-off games (it worked for Gameloft :P) start with simple games and then add something unique to that. Then you can start more complex projects and so on.
For example my first project of flash is a highscore-heavybased arkanoid with some things the original didn't have.

If you don't know how to program, maybe flash it's a nice option since with little code you can do some really neat games.

If I've ever wanted to create a "game"? Why, yes... Yes of course! In fact, I am currently busy designing the map! As strange as it may sound, the "players" will be chosen randomly, even though there is a clear pattern.

Its genre is, um... rather complicated, I'd say. But I suppose you could call it "real-time strategy". Cooperation will be the key to survival- ...Uh, I mean victory...

Oh and I've considered taking college courses but money is tight, best I try to make use of my degree and open up more options. What programming language could a fresh beginner start using? C++? Any good books, tutorials. I'm thinking about grabbing a few books from the library and locking myself in a room.

I'm no pro but I'd say Java is pretty easy as a first language. If I had to guess, I'd say C++ is better but learning another language is pretty easy once you already know one and Java just happens to be easier. Not to say C++ is that hard either... But it is pretty old and it shows. I took two programming courses during my first year in university and they were both in Java. Then at the end of the second one we had a short course (a few weeks I think) to learn how to do most of the same stuff in C++ and it really wasn't that tough once I already knew Java. Of course you can go straight for C++ but it'll be slightly tougher and it'll probably be easier to give up because of some things.

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

how much time you want to develop one ?

I'd say learning skills is highly dependant on what area of development you are most interested in (Animation, Modelling, Level Design etc etc), as for programming I'd recommend you start with C# (This language is considered "easier", but I can't comment on that as I started out with C++), C++ or JavaScript (Works in Unity as well), but in my personal opinion C# and C++ are the way to go for game programming.

Note: In my personal experience, free tutorials which you can find on the website will teach you just as much as books which you will have to purchase (or lend).

I've made a few games. Here's a link to my website where you can download them and play for free. www.2bitproductions.org

I'm mostly interested in making retro games that both look and feel like the classics.

For example I made a Halo game called Halo Gallant Belle that looks and feels like an original Gameboy game, green screen and all. I also made a color version called Gallant Girl to look and feel like a Game Gear game, with washed out screen lines and all.

Right now I'm working on some Android/iOS games, but those are secret until I publish them.

Yes, and I will possibly once I get my bachelors in graphic communication. Work on that COD, make plenty of money!

I've already designed one but It'll never be official.

no never from grown up i always have ideas for tweaking current games and past games though, little things here and there that i think would make a great game perfect
