i believe i've read sometimes that the human eye would only not see a difference anymore with over ~340ppi if you look from 25cm distance (which was meant as distance for reading)

That article I posted earlier had some stats on viewing distance and max viewable ppi. I've seen numbers between 300-400 dpi/ppi but at that point, I tend to stop paying attention. It seems to me that anything at or over 300 ppi is going to be just fine and considering that current tech usually hovers between 120-140ppi, there is loads of room to improve moving forward.

yeah i was on a german site now and they used numbers from different sources from different universities and so on (i believe 12 different numbers) and at average they say ~300ppi for 25cm is almost perfect (one number was pretty low no clue wht this was so i think a little bit more than 300 would be perfect). ipad 3 has 264ppi now.

they say everything under 200 ppi makes a huge difference and everything above 200 until the perfect ppi still improves the picture but not as much as below 200ppi.

i think this makes sense because, sure, as  more ppi as harder to tell the difference.

I read a veritable shit-ton of comic books on my iPad 2 and damn, the iPad 3's screen is so much better for reading comics. It's night and day. There are certain instances where the difference in ppi isn't only noticeable, it jumps off the screen and smacks you straight in the face. Graphic-based art that includes text is one of those instances.

But it's still not enough to get me to upgrade. The screen is really the only thing noticeably better about the iPad 3 and considering how I spent $800 on my iPad 2 and would only get about $500 for it today, that $300 isn't worth a super-nice screen. I'll wait for iPad 4 when almost everything will be better than my iPad 2 and will justify the rather hefty expense of upgrading.

i won't buy it, too. i just don't need a pad as much as i would have to buy one but i really like the ipad 3 compared to other tablets which isn't the case with the iphone 4 or 4s, i like galaxy or so more there.

i just don't understand how a "tech-geek" can say that a higher resolution like the ipad 3 has, is useless. maybe with bad eyes no clue.

I really like the iOS UI but I have to LOL at a 3.5" screen. That's why I have a 4.3" Android phone. If Apple comes out with an iPhone with a 4" screen, I'll consider going back to the platform. But right now, not so much (particularly after they pretty much went on auto-pilot for the latest iPhone update; Siri is really cool but is a software feature, not something that should be bound to only the newest iPhone).

I used the term to describe every douche bag that every (ever?) bought an Apple product beginning with the first ipod.

Buy Apple product for use and functionality = fine.  Buy Apple product to look cool = not cool.

I can't reconcile these two statements.

I'm gonna go ahead and suggest that I meet only a few people I could say honestly buy Apple stuff to look cool. They're out there, but I think the number is vastly blown out of preportion to fit a rigid "us vs them" viewpoint. But hey hard to prove either way I suppose.

Yea, my rant has a few generalizations in it.  A lot of Apple users buy their products for their use and functionality.  I will not deny that they make well tailored consumer products that people want.  The buying Apple products due to "cool factor" is probably overstated but it does happen.   I just remember a few instances this previous holiday where someone put quotes up of angry teenagers pretty much wishing their parents dead because they didn't get an iphone for the holidays.  They stated iphone (not just any smartphone).  These are the people I hate.  The ones willing to throw their parents under a bus just because they didn't get them a specific brand of cell phone or product.   I probably need to go back and touch up my rant but I believe most of the stuff is true (especially Apple sucking at computer gaming during the late 80s and through out the 90s).

I hate those little punks too, thanks for the clarification.

Yeah, see, that's exactly the kind of thing I don't want to read anymore. Trying not to upgrade here.

Honestly, comic books and web pages are the only places where I feel I need more rez. Other places would be nice, but I'm pretty content with the old screen. It helps to know that my model is lighter and will run games roughly as well (maybe even better) than the new model.

So seriously, stop telling me how good my comics would look on the iPad 3. :P

Hah, trust me, I felt the same way. I actually make a comic book so the incentive is really there for me to want that higher resolution.

Still, it's not enough. A screen won't do it. If I had the $500 iPad 2 instead of the 32GB Verizon model, I may eat $100 and upgrade. But I'm not going to eat $300 to upgrade for what amounts to a screen and little else.
