Yeah... You're still wrong. The view difference between a tablet and laptop is larger than you think. A tablet is around 18" while a laptop can be as much as 3 feet. Quick math tells me that is up to a 100% increase in viewing distance. Besides, should we stop introducing new tech because your laptop screen is kinda shitty and you're okay with that? Some of us aren't okay with the current tech available. As a digital artist, I've wanted to see these high res screens for years and I'm excited to FINALLY see them on the market. They will make my job easier and my work better.

Here is a really good article on high ppi screen tech and why it matters. http://www.kybervision.com/Blog/files/AppleRetinaDisplay.html

Who on Earth sits that far away from a laptop screen? Even on my desktop I'm no more than 2 feet away from a 24" screen!

Okay, first off I said "up to 36 inches" compared to a quite generous figure of 18" for the tablet distance. I just measured everything in my house relating to viewing distance.

My HTC Inspire (4.3" screen) is usually 10-14" away from my face when I use it.

My Kindle (B&W version) sits in the same region as my phone.

My iPad is no closer than 12" and no further than 19" when I use it. If I'm reading, it's usually in the 12-15" range (or about mid-chest level).

My laptop screen (15.4", 1680 res) is no closer than 22" and no further than 34" when I'm reclining.  If I'm working, it's in the ~25" distance.

My desktop (27" screen) sits around 32" from my face and that feels really close. If my desk was larger, I'd actually move that back a few inches.

My 42" 1080p television is about 8 feet away from my face.

My point still stands. A laptop screen is going to be somewhere between 50-100% further away than a tablet screen, meaning the ppi for the tablet is going to have to be considerably higher to achieve the same visual fidelity.

I don't know if I'm impressed or slightly scared that you actually measured all this...

I think a bit of both

I had a ruler on the desk next to me and all those devices were within arm's reach. It took less than five minutes and I guess-timated on the television based on measurements I took when I moved into this house.

It's not so much that you actually made the measurements, but that you thought the whole discussion worthy of making such measurements. Like I said, both impressed and a little scared

Ah, I see. I find this sort of thing really interesting since there is mild overlap with my profession (art & design). It's good for me to know and understand some of this stuff.

Apple Sells 3 million new iPads worldwide

"No sooner than we heard Apple's Fifth Avenue flagship store do crazy numbers — 13,000 in 12 hours, about 18 per minute — the company went official with some "record breaking" launch day sales statistics. Since March 16th (just last Friday) Apple has sold over 3 million new iPads across the globe. As Phonescoop's Eric Zeman aptly points out, that's more than RIM has sold PlayBooks and Motorola has sold Xooms in a year... combined.

For some perspective, the original iPad took 80 days to sell 3 million. Although we can't find an iPad 2 launch weekend sales figure from Apple (oddly enough), Reuters that following weekend reported and estimated 1 million over its first three days. According to our admittedly rough math skills, that means the new iPad did three times as well."

The new iPad launched in 10 countries on Friday and sold 3 million already, those are crazy numbers! The next rollout will be on March 23 when it launches in 25 more countries.

3/16 launch (US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, Switzerland and the UK; along with Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.)

3/23 launch Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Macau, Mexico, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden.)

yeah it's sick that countries like italy and spain did not even have the release there.

For anyone saying that the resolution doesn't matter, that's just a personal preference there. As a photographer, the iPad 3 is a dream. 300ppi is considered professional print resolution where above that is going to be difficult to discern. The iPad 3 is really close to that, which is nice when showing off photo portfolios to people.

As for the Apple hate, I'm finding the Android fans / Apple haters these days much more annoying than the Apple fans themselves these days. Some just completely obsess about hating Apple. I like Apple, but I'm not absolutely in love with them. They did something right to get to where they are today.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

I don't even like Apple and I find Apple haters more anoying than Apple fans. Tho they are often both irrational.

but i still don't understand why dirtyp2002 believes that a screen with more ppi than the ipad 2 has won't improve the experience for his eyes. the ipad 2 has 130 ppi or so and this is clearly not the best for the viewing distance you use an ipad. it's not a picture on the wall...

It happens in every Apple thread ever created on the internet. You can set your watch to this type of post; it's that bloody consistent. No matter how good an idea it is, there are people who will claim the feature is useless simply because the product has a piece of fruit on the back of the case. Of course, there are plenty of Apple zealots who do the exact opposite. Every last one of them is insufferable, really.

Retina displays are not the most important innovation in the history of computing. Some people will either not care or are too blind to tell the difference in ppi. But it is an important step forward in computing. Higher quality screens improve the user experience in a plethora of ways and we should be embracing this technological shift, not mocking it. Because, no matter your opinion on the subject, everybody is going to be transitioning to these screens in the next 12-24 months. But hey, maybe the detractors in this thread are simply smarter than the heads of R&D at Samsung, Apple, Motorola, etc.

As someone who used a 320/240 IIRC 13" screen as a child, AMEN!
