It was 'cool' in 2008...mainstream by 2010..it will be dead by next year.

But, but, but... I thought you loved 3D??.

loved is the correct word. 2 years ago it was cool and fresh...today i cant wait till it dies off so i dont have to pay a premium to watch movies that are only in 3d and have no business being in 3d.

So you don't think 3D adds to films that are shot in 3D and not just converted??, You don't think 3D no longer adds anything to games??. I thought you used to love playing games in 3D, so whats changed about that part??

Probably the same thing as happened to me in '98. You get used to it, the novelty wears off. You start noticing the effect less and less as your brain catches on that it's not real 3D and you start noticing the crosstalk more and more. Then you realize that a brighter, higher resolution, higher framerate 2D picture outweighs the benefits of 3D.

As long as you have to look through darkened glasses or have to keep your head in 1 spot while watching, 2D will win out in the long run.

But if things keep going as they have been, then we'll get a new wave of 3D in 2018, maybe with active headtracking glasses free 3D tvs this time.

Well 3D has come along way since 98 it seems. I dont see how the effect could ware off, as that would be like saying after awhile you're eyes will only see in 2D, unless you're talking about 3d from 98??, then i could imagin how painfull that 3d must have been.. And with todays 3D you're head doesn't have to be in one spot, i can walk around and still see the 3D, also on most of todays TV's with a good set of 3D glasses cross talk is all but gone, sure you will notice bits here and their on some scenes, but nothing to take away from the game/movie, maybe it was just them 98 3D tv's or glasses or whatever sucked??. and we will have glasses free 3D tv's well before 2018.

And disolitud this ones back to you, you where one of the biggest braggers of 3d TV's before everyone started getting them, so once again i ask you what has changed??, you used to brag all the time about playing ps2 games on PCSX2 in 3D in 1080P, and GC/Wii games on Dolphin in 1080P in 3D, and used to say how great they used to look, also you used to say the same about PC games. So now i ask you what has changed?? (Wishes he had roma's sig right now lol).

You really want to get to the bottom of this eh? :)

Before I answer what changed I'll point out that 3D in 1998 and 3D today are not different at all in terms of technology and execution. Back then projectors and high end CRT monitors were doing 100+hz which is sufficient for each eye to get a smooth image. Look up Elsa 3D revelator glasses... Better yet, here is a review from 1999 -http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/graphics/display/elsa-revelator.html

Its the exact same 3D effects and quality as today only the games obviously look better now graphically. So this whole "todays 3D quality is so much better" is not correct. Its more accessible and cheaper but the 3D pop out effects are exactly the same.

Now as to what changed that made me not really bother with 3D anymore...

The main reason is what SvennoJ said...effect wears off over time. I've been gaming in 3D since Nvidia 3D vision came out in early 2009 so 3 years later of same style of effects does get repetitive. I haven't seen anything new that blew me away in 3D since Metro 2033.

I've also moved away from PC gaming and only have time to play a console game here and there. Its been the case lately that games I want to play that have 3D look absolutely terrible in 3D. Like Halo Anniversary and sonic generations are 2 games I enjoyed recently and they look totally unplayable to me in 3D. Actually Sonic Generations on PC in 1080p3D looks amazing and like a next gen game compared to consoles but thats another story...

So untl consoles are able to give me 3D games in which I can adjust depth and convergence, and are not sccrificing resolution, brightness and frame rate...I don't see myself getting back on the 3D bandwagon.

So to sum up, following factors contribute to the fact I am not really a 3D fanboy these days:

40% the 3D effect getting boring and repettitive

30% the suckiness on console 3D quality

30% lack of time to fiddle with PC's and achieve desirable 3D effects for games I want to play

And dont get me wrong, Dolphin emulator in 3D is still beyond badass and can produce some of the collest 3D effects you will ever see. The only problem with it is that after you format a computer and lose all settings, it literally takes few days of tweaking to set up properly.

I do want to mention that for people looking to be completely blown away by 3D, the best 3D effect Ive ever seen by a huge margin is - Nvidia 3D vision and a 1080p 3D capable display, dolphin emulator, Sonic adveture 2 on gamecube, Final Rush level, depth at max, convergence as high as your eyes will allow.

Stereoscopic 3D is still the same as in '98. Only the shutter glasses are now 120hz instead of 60hz. The effect actually worked better on CRT tvs/monitors since they naturally have lower latencies, thus less cross talk. Early LCD screens pretty much killed off home 3D for a while.

The effect becomes less noticeable as your brain catches on it's not real 3D in the sense that moving your head from side to side does not change the perspective. What you perceive as 3D is determined by many factors, stereoscopic vision is just 1 of them. As you get used to it your brain starts using the other clues more to compensate for the conflicting stereoscopic information that doesn't match the rest of what your senses are telling you.

What I meant with "you have to be in 1 spot" is for the current crop of glassless tvs. Just like the 3ds you can't move your head out of the sweet spot. With shutter glasses you can walk around, but it destroys the illusion since the perspective doesn't change. Shutter glasses will always have cross talk even if the display is perfect since the glasses don't turn all the way dark. You start noticing it more as your brain tries to make sense of the weird floating things popping out at you that you can't focus on.

We'll have glassless tv's before 2018, but probably not affordable holographic displays that solve all the other problems that stereoscopic presentations have.

Anyway it's still fun to use, and I'll be very tempted to go 3D again when headtracking becomes standard. Headtracking + stereoscopic 3D will at least solve the problem of the fixed perspective ruining the illusion. Too bad that will never help with 3D movies.

I am a massive supporter of 3D entertainment. I think 3D is the near future. But I do not think glasses are. I feel glasses free 3D is the goal and Nintendo helped start that revolution. It will take a decade or so for glasses free 3D tech to be developed till it is used as the default however.

Every time I play 3DS I have the 3D on full blast it is simply amazing. When ever a movie comes out with 3D I see it in 3D and if IMAX is available in IMAX 3D.

Simply put 3D rocks it is the near future hopefully people won't delay progress.

As a gamer for very long now, I always prefered games based on their gameplay, graphics; albeit nice, being a second thought.

3D is just another gimmick thrown to the mass market imho. It is not giving us intrinsequely better games. Maybe, the only game 3D can be a plus would be the next Paper Mario. Otherwise, atm, no games uses 3D for gameplay afaik.

I like it in movies when it's done well, Shrek 4 was a good example of that. But I think that gaming is where the fun really is, even though I have limited experience with it unfortunately. What I have seen has been very nice however.
