Wait, "Nintendo" isn't a franchise or a platform exclusive. They are a console manufacture and a game publisher with inhouse development teams. What single franchise does Nintendo have that consistently sells as well as the main Halo games have.

And if you say Mario Kart ............ then I would maybe agree, but it doesn't really seem like an apples to apples comparison as MK isn't even considered one of Nintendo's big budget releases like Zelda or Mario Galaxy.

2D Mario, Mario Kart and Pokemon all spring to my mind.

Pokemon, 3D Mario, 2D Mario, Mario Kart, Smash Bros, Wii _____ Series'. That's just Nintendo. Sony arguably have Gran Turismo that's Halo-level and Microsoft themselves have Kinect Adventures which is bigger than any Halo.

This gen, halo 3 has been bigger than any 3d mario, smash bros, or gran turismo. Microsoft probably reasoned that mario kart, 2d mario, and wii series to be "casual titles" that don't directly compete with halo, and so ignored them to make a more dazziling statement. Either way pr statements are always going to be over the top.

"But if you look at platform exclusives, nothing is bigger than Halo.”

I'd expect something this stupid from Xbox Republic forum posters, not from an Xbox director.

Nailed it. I don't understand why they would even make that statement. If it was nothing is bigger than halo on the 360, then yeah totally.

Obviously MS meant towards Sony/PS3 since it is the 360s only direct competitor.

Well, I read platform exclusive and the Wii is a platform and it has exclusives which have sold much more than halo. Also, Gran turismo (I know, apples to oranges) is a bigger franchise than Halo, as far as I'm concerned but that's another topic for another time.

I'm sorry, but I just had to point this out. Grand Turismo franchise is not bigger than Halo, or not anymore. Three reasons why GT series has sold more overall than Halo: 1. It's been around longer. 2. GT was bundled like crazy during the ps2 era. 3. The Ps2 install base was 100 million + while Xbox had 20 mil +. Image if Halo was on the Ps2 platform instead of xbox and what type of crazy sales it could have managed? Compare Halo and GT franchise this gen it's not even close, especially with PS3 and 360 having almost same installbase it's a much more fair comparison.

To sum it up, if there was a popularity contest to between Halo and GT. I sure as hell would put my money on Halo.

When he's thinking about tons of money, I wouldn't try to give a sense to Lardmer's speeches.

I think they meant Xbox 360 only when they said "platform exclusive".  You know, exclusive to the Xbox platform instead of the third party games that seem to be running the show right now. Since the release of the first Xbox, the Halo series was number one in sales, online play, and overall popularity. It was the big dog in the world of Xbox. Now, even though Halo is still the biggest exclusive series on Xbox, it's getting beaten by a couple of third party series when it come to sales and being the most played on Xbox Live. I think M$ wants Halo to be number one on Xbox and they feel that Master Chief will be the reason that this will happen. No flames being thrown at Nintendo or Sony at all.

Unfortunately, Master Chief is a boring and generic character. He has the personality of a robot and he appears to be wearing green moto-cross gear. Halo 4 is going to have to do a lot to make him a likeable character because the game has always been the star and Master Chief was just a vessel for the player. The games haven't really gotten worse. Just too much of a good thing and that can be boring. I hope 343 is up to the challenge.

When it comes to platform exclusive franchises, it is at number 3 I would say.

  1. Mario (Mario Kart, Mario Party, Mario Tennis etc.  = Mario!)
  2. Pokemon
  3. Halo

Wii XXX is not a franchise, just like Kinect XXX is not IMO.

Since this was aimed towards PS3, I would agree.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

Reading through the OP multiple times, I think it's really too ambiguious to confirm what Microsoft meant. Though, I agree with D21Lewis, they probably meant platform exclusive on the Xbox. I think the entire article was about Xbox software, no?

But there's no point in really debating about what they really meant considering we'll never know. They could have easily noted if they were talking about HD consoles only. Companies do these things on purpose just to make nice PR statements, so it's really not worth debating over what we think they meant. They probably just do these things just to fuck with our heads for the Lulz.

That still wouldn't make sense. Even if Nintendo wasn't Microsoft's direct competitor, it wouldn't be okay to just ignore their existence when mentioning platform exclusives.

Besides, I don't agree with the idea of Nintendo & the Xbox not being direct competitors. During NPD, you hear Microsoft say how they've been #1 for XX weeks, with XX weeks ago being when they surpassed Nintendo. If Nintendo wasn't their true competitor, then they would have been claiming #1 a long time ago when it was Wii > Xbox > Playstation in America. (much like how they're claiming #1 here).

If they wanted to exclude Nintendo, they could have easily said amongst HD consoles. But they didn't, which leads me to believe that they were only talking about Xbox software.

I believe that's called PR, and everyone does it, in their own little ways.
