Japanese style games are old news. Nobody but the niche community wants to play their games. Even if they tried to make FPSs that the US wants, they will fail because they do not understand American culture and instead put in dumb anime cliche themes in everything, ensuring that nobody but their shrinking forever alone fanbase will buy their games. They also don't understand how to make good online multiplayer games or services at a competitive level because most of their studios did not start out as PC developers, whereas most of the console devs in America and Europe have their roots in PC gaming.
I think they need to focus on making quality games like they always have, instead of trying to make guesses at what the Western fanbase wants. Personally, I'm from the US but tbh i hate western rpgs. I think they are boring and generic with characters and plot lines that are dull. I definitely prefer jrpgs. If i had to make one suggestion to jrpg development teams it would to stop making things so cliche. I love jrpgs for their interesting plot lines and characters that i actually care about, but sometimes the dialogue gets a little cheesey.

They really need to get rid of cliché if they want to attract the West, for sure.

"I think we should be researching more, researching what the world wants and what sells around the world. I think we can study more and hopefully make more products that will be accepted and enjoyed around the world," he said.
In that statement, I'd think he's implying more westernization. As they'd be trying to appeal to more western tastes. My Question would be does he mean critically or Review Wise?
For instance, a game like Xenoblade is still a failure (atleast in Europe) sales-wise compared to new WRPG's, like the Witcher (also a New IP), Deus Ex(not New, but dormant), Mass Effect (New IP). or even alpha protocol (New IP, considered a failure sales-wise).
Now what can you do to make a game like that appeal more in the west? Or will it just never.

Unless the West does not even yet know what it really wants, and that what is ultimately accepted and enjoyed around the world is not COD. Put that in your pipe and smoke it

Whatever they did to make games like Chrono Trigger , Final Fantasy VII, etc so famous. Although I have to admit one of the reasons why JRPGs arent as huge as they used to be in the past is because of those certain WRPGs like Elder Scrolls. |
Elder Scrolls has been around forever... I think it's gotten more popular because it's been dumb-downed for consoles but thats another story :D.
Chrono Trigger though, despite it being held as a classic it never has sold that well in the west. I mean Alpha Protocol outsold it unless you combine, SNES and the DS game sales.
Brand Rape Occurs, in the west too, with games Like Assasin's Creed. Call of Duty. And mario does it to a ton of success. So it's not a unique problem too japan.
I think, that in the early 90's Japanese Industry was more prominent because there weren't as many western Devs, and because of what happened to atari in the 80's. Now western devs include devs from al lot of big countries, USA, Canada, Some Counties in Europe, Devs Like CD Projekt. There's a lot more competition so I don't think it's possible for them to ever be as dominant again.
I'm not denying Japanese Devs don't have issues. they do. But they're not worse than EA(who always lose money, despite launching a successful MMO) :P.
It all comes down to the simple fact that development budgets shot up too far too fast in this generation, meaning that developers were forced to dilute proven game formulas to try to reach broader audiences because they quite frankly had to in order to hedge the costs of HD development. We've seen this problem become less of an issue over the course of the generation as costs have come down, such that the number of big-budget flops, so prolific in 2008, have dropped down, but in the case of some Japanese brands the damage has been done (namely Final Fantasy)
One also forgets that Japan pretty much owns the dedicated handheld space, an area where Western third parties have never seriously tried, and a space that for the 7th gen accounted for over 200 million units (dissolving overlap, you're still looking at at least 160 million unique individuals), and Japanese games have been more innovative and successful in these spaces (Monster Hunter, Level 5's stable, et al).
Japan shouldn't focus too much on the Japanese market (you see the problems with that phenomenon in anime currently, and it works to contract the market just as much as trying to please too many people does), but it is clear that the PC-development mentality that works for many Western developers does not work for the Japanese

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

The majority consider XIII-2 to be better so to call it abysmal is quite a stretch, if you just look at amazon or youtube or even here. But sales wise, it hasn't done well.
I think, that those spinoffs hurt it, whether or not it makes SE money, IDK. But here's my thing. If the JRPG genre was prevalent, it wouldn't be so dependant on 1 IP, or 1 company for that matter (SE).
But here's my opinion.
JRPG's seems to be a niche Genre. Aside from Pokemon (which a lot of people don't even call a JRPG), ditto with Dark Soul's (how is dark soul's not considered by many to be a JRPG? it has just as much in common with Final Fantasy as Oblivions has with mass effect, but idk) Kingdom Hearts, though I think this does well because of disney branding. So JRPG's aren't really going to be the focus for sales in the west, As highly as persona is rated, it hasn't cracked 1 million, and Xenoblade won't.
The focus in my mind from that quote is creating games like dead rising, resident evil, Metal Gear, lost planet. That generally are sort of a western style game with a japanese twist.
