The majority consider XIII-2 to be better so to call it abysmal is quite a stretch, if you just look at amazon or youtube or even here. But sales wise, it hasn't done well.
I think, that those spinoffs hurt it, whether or not it makes SE money, IDK. But here's my thing. If the JRPG genre was prevalent, it wouldn't be so dependant on 1 IP, or 1 company for that matter (SE).
But here's my opinion. JRPG's seems to be a niche Genre. Aside from Pokemon (which a lot of people don't even call a JRPG), ditto with Dark Soul's (how is dark soul's not considered by many to be a JRPG? it has just as much in common with Final Fantasy as Oblivions has with mass effect, but idk) Kingdom Hearts, though I think this does well because of disney branding. So JRPG's aren't really going to be the focus for sales in the west, As highly as persona is rated, it hasn't cracked 1 million, and Xenoblade won't.
The focus in my mind from that quote is creating games like dead rising, resident evil, Metal Gear, lost planet. That generally are sort of a western style game with a japanese twist.

Oh I meant in terms of sales for FFXIII-2 but for FFX-2, that was abysmal in design XD
SE's a crazy company, they've pretty much dropped every single other franchise they've made (Mana, Valkyrie Profile, Star Ocean, Xenogears, Vagrant Story, etc) and decided to solely work on the FF franchise name. They have more FF games than any other games of several series combined imo. That imo was a big mistake on their part.
At least they are making DQ and KH games....also hopefully they can revive the tomb raider series with their latest purchase of the developing team. That could help them with the western goals.
You are right, JRPGs are a minority like Fighters were few years ago. Now a days you got fighters coming out left and right and becoming huge success stories compared to the ones released in the early 2000s.
@last sentence you made - Yeah I agree, like I said making new IPs is the way to go while continuing on with the current franchises, probably make a certain RPG game every 5 years or so similar to what they did with Star Ocean.
I think SE could of done that with FF Versus XIII but they decided to go with the FF brand name because their crazy like that XD.
P.S. Never heard anyone say that Pokemon isnt a JRPG o.O

IDK maybe, I guess with pokemon, there's a lot of kids, and they're like it's pokemon! without any labels.
I think They've done a great job with Eidos. (Eidos, was my favorite western developer until like 2003 or 4 so I'm quite happy, that eidos is back to being eidos or Square-Enix Europe).
Ironically my first Square Game I played (FFVII PC version) was published by eidos.
Yeah, I'm worried about Versus XIII sales wise. They should just not call it final fantasy anything and hope to start a new IP like you said. Final Fantasy XIII-2, didn't seem to cost much money to make (beings the amount of assets re-used dev time) so even with it's low sales, I think it made money. Versus XIII however, is a different story. I really think they should XIII no matter what.
But I mean, even with XIII-2, they could have created a new IP, The battle system was the same. But mechanically everything else was different. Not to mention that the plot had very little to do with the plot of XIII (I loved this game btw, but still I see this). I think they should brand, like Nintendo does, without having a number. But I could be wrong.
Not everything I wrote may make complete sense I wrote it rather quick. So I might not have said everything correctly.
