Whatever they did to make games like Chrono Trigger , Final Fantasy VII, etc so famous. Although I have to admit one of the reasons why JRPGs arent as huge as they used to be in the past is because of those certain WRPGs like Elder Scrolls. |
Elder Scrolls has been around forever... I think it's gotten more popular because it's been dumb-downed for consoles but thats another story :D.
Chrono Trigger though, despite it being held as a classic it never has sold that well in the west. I mean Alpha Protocol outsold it unless you combine, SNES and the DS game sales.
Brand Rape Occurs, in the west too, with games Like Assasin's Creed. Call of Duty. And mario does it to a ton of success. So it's not a unique problem too japan.
I think, that in the early 90's Japanese Industry was more prominent because there weren't as many western Devs, and because of what happened to atari in the 80's. Now western devs include devs from al lot of big countries, USA, Canada, Some Counties in Europe, Devs Like CD Projekt. There's a lot more competition so I don't think it's possible for them to ever be as dominant again.
I'm not denying Japanese Devs don't have issues. they do. But they're not worse than EA(who always lose money, despite launching a successful MMO) :P.
