Forums - Gaming - Steam by the numbers - 58% of PC game sales are digital!

Good numbers for steam.

Think that pic is a double post, but I don't see the original thread...

Anyway I think Steam lost a lot of marketshare. Probably going to lose even more. Doubt that the next numbers will show them over 50%.

58% is a bit misleading. Is it by revenue or total sales. Total sales wouldn't be as impressive considering  there are thousands of steam indie/arcade games that are never sold retail, that skew the results. I wish valve would do a comparision of individual titles. Skyrim or MW3 would be pretty interesting to see because they have yet to have a ridiculous sale on steam to skew the results. Then we will know how much a "full fledged" pc game typically sells retail vs digital at full price.

Either way very impressive that steam has over a 50% marketshare in digital distribution. Suprised EA is that low, though I think these charts are a bit outdated. I could have sworn I've seen them a few months ago.

Hmm I don't remember seeing it here. Maybe it was a similar infographic with PC vs. console sales?

Yeah no problem I won't lock it. Not sure if someone created a thread for that or just used it in one random post to prove a point.

Well it says June 2011 and they use the name EA Store instead of Origin so yeah not that recent. I'm sure BF3 changed the marketshare a bit.

Since when do retailers earn 70% of the price of a game?

This will likely be a completely different story in 2014 when Windows 8 with marketplace releases. Steam will still be significant, however I suspect that the Live marketplace may in a few years be the outright largest online store in existence by virtue of the X number Xbox consoles plus hundreds of millions of Windows 8 PC, tablet and mobile licenses sold.

Tease.

I'm actually quite surprised that it's ONLY 58%--when I go to my local game store, they usually only have five or six PC games that have even been released in the last year.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

Since Valve said so !

So actually according to this:

there is no big difference (obviously no platform royalties for PC games). Valve gets more than a retailer, publisher gets slightly more on Steam compared to retail.

Excellent, when I played on the PC I used to love steam, so I wish them the best.

But I feel sad knowing that GOG.com represent not even 5% of the market - they are the best!
