Forums - Gaming - What genre will dominate the next generation? (8th gen)

Sandbox and FPS are going to dominate.

ALSO, this isn't really a genre, but I can see games that only have online components becoming more accepted (like Warhawk, SOCOM: Confrontation, etc...)

ALSO, I wonder if next gen will adopt an App Store like feature where people can buy little games for a dollar onto their console.

Platinums: Red Dead Redemption, Killzone 2, LittleBigPlanet, Terminator Salvation, Uncharted 1, inFamous Second Son, Rocket League

......Zelda is a platformer?

Zelda 2 was!

Anyhow, I'm imagining a mixture of the FPS and MMO. FPS's will continue to be popular, but the advancements in consoles, particularly the Wii U's tablet, convince me that MMOs can become multiplatform on a regular basis. Plus, although WOW is losing popularity, Blizzard will release a new MMO and make WOW free to play, while other recent and upcoming MMOs and MMO-esque games such as Star Wars: The Old Republic, Dragon Quest X, The Secret World, Final Fantasy 14 2.0, Guild Wars 2, and Minecraft will boost the popularity of the genre also.

I hope not! I really dis-like MMO's.

OT: I'm pretty sure the 7th gen. was dominated by the "Casual" Genre.

Augmented reality real life simulator genre will be king next gen.

I thought 3rd person shooters would have kicked off more this gen, last gen, but Gears of War is the only 3rd person shooter to really deliver. OFC you have games like Uncharted, Alan Wake and GR, but they are not the same.

I would like to see 3rd person shooters take over FPS next gen.

I'd designate the 5th generation as being owned by Racers, just because RPGs were really only big on PSX. Racers ran big across the major platforms

We could see the real rise of RPGs in this generation, with games like Skyrim being a forerunner. Sandbox-ish, but the focal point on the roleplaying more than the adventure.

I'm sure you know just forgot, but Pokemon was more than just 'big' in the 5th gen

1 Pokémon Red / Green / Blue Version GB 1996 Role-Playing Nintendo 11.27 8.89 10.22 1.00 31.37
2 Pokémon Gold / Silver Version GB 1999 Role-Playing Nintendo 9.00 6.18 7.20 0.71 23.10

Motion games dominated this passing generation. It was only really Call of Duty that did very well for FPS, and there were several motion titles that dwarfed it. RPGs also sold better than FPS when you factor in handhelds.

This coming generation? I think RPGs will dominate.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

MMO crossbreeds e.g a FPS MMO

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

Xbox One: What are you doing Dave?

Admittedly i've only been considering consoles in all of this. I mean, clearly sandbox games weren't big on GBA/Ngage and FPSes were not that big on DS/PSP

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

I want it to be sandbox action-adventure games, like Zelda and Assassin's Creed

sadly FPS.
