Forums - Nintendo - Convince me to buy a 3DS!

Ok, the thread title is a little misleading. I think I am going to buy one very soon regardless of what's said here, but I do have some questions about it that I hope some people can answer!

I know the 3DS can connect to wi-fi, but does anyone know if it can also connect to Ad-hoc? For anyone who doesn't know, ad-hoc is what you get when you turn a PC into a wireless hotspot. Useful for if you're out somewhere that has a wired connection only, and you have a laptop that you can plug in and then send a wireless signal to your other devcies with.

Are there any rumours of a larger model being released any time soon? I'd hate to buy one tomorrow and then 6 weeks from now Nintendo releases one with a bigger screen.

How does the friend system work? is it shit friend codes for each game like the wii or did they do it proper this time?

What kind of battery life does it have?

Are there any decent RPGs out for it yet aside from Ocarina of Time?

I think that's all I had for now. Thanks in advance for any help.

I love my PSVita, feels brilliant; light and the controls are fantastic (dual analogs especially), looks sexy and the screen is absolutely gorgeous. Very powerful hardware. Feature rich. Incredible line-up of games and very good support has been promised.

Hahaha, thanks for the info, but I won't be getting a Vita. Not unless they somehow convince Nintendo to let them put Mariokart and Super Mario on it! Even then, I have a hard time supporting Sony after having purchased one of their MP3 players a few years back. What a piece of fucking shit. Biggest waste of $100 I have ever spent. If Sony sends me $100 in the mail for the agony I went thorugh with that worthless piece of junk then I might consider purchasing another one of their products.

The shitty friend code system is still there, but as soon as you've got their codes there's more ways to interact with them than on the Wii. And, as far as I know, ad-hoc is not supported.

The rest is pretty much answered.

I don't believe there's any native ad-hoc support but I'm sure if you're savvy enough you can set it up. My guess is that the set up would have to be very specific (use a certain type of encryption to make it work - most likely WEP). If I get a chance today I'll try it out and let you know if I have any success.

The friend codes are a little better than on Wii. You still have to deal with these crappy long numbers to add friends to your list, but once they're added they have a name associated to them. The friend codes are also system wide this time around so you don't get a different one for every game. You just add a friend once and they're there universally.

There are always rumours about Nintendo hardware refreshes given their history with handheld refreshes. It's only a matter of time before they announce a refresh and everyone and their mother goes "Ha! I told you so!". If I recall correctly the DS had its first refresh announced about 13 months after it initially hit the market. So if something were to be announced it would probably be between April and E3.

It gets from 3.5 to 6 hours playing 3DS games based on the brightness level, having power saving mode enabled, and enabling/disabling wifi. When playing regular DS games I've gotten 12 hours out of a single charge.

I'm currently loving Tales of the Abyss 3D and there have been a few announcements and screenshots for other titles in the works. Shin Megami Tensei Devil Survivor (?) is another RPG I've seen people playing in my friends list.

Thanks so much for the reply. Please let me know how your experiment with an ad-hoc connection goes. I'm quite curious about it.

i would never convince anyone to buy a 3DS, because i feel cheated, having payed the huge sum of money that is 170€.

got a Smartphone a month ago, and its raping my 3DS. the latter really feels like a cheap toy in comparison, and Games like Sims, Dead Space, Zenonia (available for DS online for 8 bucks.. its free for android) and Games suited for 5 minute-sessions (like angry birds.. really.) just fit better. (imo)

edit: i hate Mario Games though., this might be a mind-changer for people who still like stealing peach from bowser.. but i am done playing the bad guy, i mean seriously, youre stealing tiny bowser's mom every fucking time... u hurt this poor child beyond belief.

This is incorrect. There is only one friend code per system which basically works like a gamertag or PSN ID (or now an SEN account).

Did I not just say that?

No, you didn't. The OP asked if it's still one friend code per game and you basically said "yes, but non-game applications have been improved over the Wii".

Wow, never used the friend codes for the Wii (and didn't read the OP too well) so I had no idea. Having one friend code per game is freakin' disastrous.

You should also add that you are the guy who was against the European release of Xenoblade Chronicles, because it interfered with your plans to play games on the PS3.

i admit, guilty. Even worse is that i didnt play Xenoblade until now... but yeah, i will do when i want to, i mean, i just played Persona 4 at the end of last year, AEONS after its release, and it became my favourite game of all time. So yeah, i wont bind myself to time anymore, i'll play games when i want to play them, regardeless of when they were released.

also, my post was a bit harsh, actually, there simply isnt much on the 3DS right now if youre not into first party games (except for Ocarina, brilliant one to play in 3D!), which makes the system obsolete. There will be cool stuff in the future of course, and i cant wait to play KH and maybe Pokemon (and oh dear god, rythm thief and theatrism look brilliant!), but if youre a picky gamer, the newest Handhelds might be a mistake to buy - for NOW.

edit: something that bugs me here, is that the 3DS' manufacturing is inconsistent, i swear, my 3DS is the third, and all of them had an issue. (just search for the wobbly screen on youtube.) .. my Smarphone is perfectly manufactured, and i know no one where it is different. (except for Apple products, drop em and the display dies. >: D... )

Make your laptop into an Wi-Fi hotspot instead: http://www.connectify.me
