Why. Miyamoto doesn't like to play games... and he creates gameplay!
And it's not hard to argue he's the greatest designer in the history of the Industry.
Writing for a bioware game/RPG in general is really just a lot like writing for a cartoon or anime. Little bit of info here, action so people don't get bored, little bit of info their, action so people don't get bored, little bit of info there, storybattle that makes sense.

I think you are mixing up Miyamoto with Hiroshi Yamauchi, the former president of Nintendo. Miyamoto does like video games. |
Does he? I read an interview in Buisness Week a couple years back, for Wii Music, where he stated that he pretty much never played videogames preffering his many other hobbies and that they were the inspirations for his games.
Only playing games that are currently being developed, more for a quality assurance, guidence type of thing.

| RolStoppable said: I laughed hard when reading this. Points of interest: 1) An option to skip gameplay. Ridiculous. The handful of people who would like games to be this way can already go to Youtube to experience games the way they want. Just watch the cutscenes. 2) Immature behavior of people who work in the gaming industry. Classic. If you make yourself a public figure, you need to be able to take the heat. You are held to a higher standard than the fans and trolls who are often still teenagers. 3) Bioware makes adult games. Hahahaha. More like wannabe-adult games. 4) The conclusion that this makes gamers look bad. Laughable. That would be the case, if Bioware responded in a professional manner or not at all. Then again, this is Jim Sterling, so this might have been sarcasm. |
Good points which I all agree with.
I've always been against this outspoken mission to try and make gaming appear sophisticated and be taken seriously, often compared to movies and literature. Why care? Gaming is what it is, and if it's mostly immature and childish (not saying it is, but what if it was? Would we be condemned to Hell?) then that's the true nature of it and that should be the public image of it. No need to try artifically hide and censor practitioners of your hobby who you don't feel comfortable with.
